Capoeira Hits The Screen In Brazil’s BESOURO (BEETLE)!

If there is one thing that global martial arts fans have been practically gagging for over the past several years it is a film built around Brazilian martial art capoeira. We’ve seen the acrobatic discipline featured in a few recent titles - Tom Yum Goong and Mirage Man both feature fights against capoeira trained opponents - but there has yet to be a high profile film dedicated to the art. Until now. It’s titled Besouro, it hits Brazilian screens in October, and the trailer looks absolutely spectacular. You’ll find it below the break.

Road Trip: 252 Degree Mobile Home

This is a concept created by four graduate students @ The Superior Institute of Design in France. The 252 degree mobile home is a fully functioning living quarters that unfolds like an accordion. It boasts a space larger than most NYC apartments. There is a bedroom, bathroom, living room, kitchen, and office, each of which can be folded up individually and put away at will. It can be attached to the back of your vehicle as any other mobile home and completely changes the whole "road trip" concept...Bless...

Wonder of the World: The Bagan Empire....

Hope everyone is feeling good and looking forward to all of the newness that is ahead. The gift of travel, whether physical or astro, allows you to witness life's movement in a completely different place and under a completely different frequency. It really does give you "sight beyond sight" to bear witness to all of the magic that exist in the world through people, places, and things. Please don't take it for granted. Knowing that the ruins of the Bagan Empire still exist in Burma, changed my whole world this weekend. It gave me yet, another place to look forward to experiencing sooner than later. Bagan is an ancient empire in modern day Myanmar (Burma), with some of the most breathtaking structures, from an architectural standpoint, or an other for that matter. The majority of the temples were built in the 11th-13th centuries by the 1st Burmese empire. The ruins of the city cover about 15 square miles and has similar architectural style to the neighboring kingdom of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Both Buddhist empires were built around the same time. Unfortunately, the modern day ruling of the Junta party in Burma is carelessly restoring the ruins by using modern day supplies and design. This compromises all integrity and authenticity of the original structures. In some cases, "brand new" isn't always the best thing. Delight in your day....Bless and Be Well....

Sweet Green Juice Recipe

1 green or red apple (or both if making juice for two)
1/2 head of Romaine lettuce
1 cucumber
3 stalks of celery
Handful of parsley
1/2 large carrot or one small carrot (optional)
1/2 clove of garlic (optional)

Apples cut and cored. Do not juice apple seeds as they contain naturally forming arsenic. Best to juice the Romaine first. Juice the greens slowly. If juicing garlic with a centrifugal juicer, put the garlic in with the green so the juicer catches it better. For a deeper green juice you can add a few kale or spinach leaves. Enjoy!

Heat Forms Potentially Harmful Substance In High-fructose Corn Syrup, Bee Study Finds

Researchers have established the conditions that foster formation of potentially dangerous levels of a toxic substance in the high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) that is often fed to honey bees. Their study, which appears in the current issue of ACS' bi-weekly Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, may also have implications for soft drinks and dozens of other human foods that contain HFCS. The substance, hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), forms mainly from heating fructose.
In the new study, Blaise LeBlanc and Gillian Eggleston and colleagues note HFCS's ubiquitous usage as a sweetener in beverages and processed foods. Some commercial beekeepers also feed it to bees to increase reproduction and honey production. When exposed to warm temperatures, HFCS can form HMF and kill honeybees. Some researchers believe that HMF may be a factor in Colony Collapse Disorder, a mysterious disease that has killed at least one-third of the honeybee population in the United States.

The scientists measured levels of HMF in HFCS products from different manufacturers over a period of 35 days at different temperatures. As temperatures rose, levels of HMF increased steadily. Levels jumped dramatically at about 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

"The data are important for commercial beekeepers, for manufacturers of HFCS, and for purposes of food storage. Because HFCS is incorporated as a sweetener in many processed foods, the data from this study are important for human health as well," the report states. It adds that studies have linked HMF to DNA damage in humans. In addition, HMF breaks down in the body to other substances potentially more harmful than HMF.

The Four Noble Truths>>>

1. Life means suffering.

2. The origin of suffering is attachment.

3. The cessation of suffering is attainable.

4. The path to the cessation of suffering.

1. Life means suffering.

To live means to suffer, because the human nature is not perfect and neither is the world we live in. During our lifetime, we inevitably have to endure physical suffering such as pain, sickness, injury, tiredness, old age, and eventually death; and we have to endure psychological suffering like sadness, fear, frustration, disappointment, and depression. Although there are different degrees of suffering and there are also positive experiences in life that we perceive as the opposite of suffering, such as ease, comfort and happiness, life in its totality is imperfect and incomplete, because our world is subject to impermanence. This means we are never able to keep permanently what we strive for, and just as happy moments pass by, we ourselves and our loved ones will pass away one day, too.

2. The origin of suffering is attachment.

The origin of suffering is attachment to transient things and the ignorance thereof. Transient things do not only include the physical objects that surround us, but also ideas, and -in a greater sense- all objects of our perception. Ignorance is the lack of understanding of how our mind is attached to impermanent things. The reasons for suffering are desire, passion, ardour, pursuit of wealth and prestige, striving for fame and popularity, or in short: craving and clinging. Because the objects of our attachment are transient, their loss is inevitable, thus suffering will necessarily follow. Objects of attachment also include the idea of a "self" which is a delusion, because there is no abiding self. What we call "self" is just an imagined entity, and we are merely a part of the ceaseless becoming of the universe.

3. The cessation of suffering is attainable.

The cessation of suffering can be attained through nirodha. Nirodha means the unmaking of sensual craving and conceptual attachment. The third noble truth expresses the idea that suffering can be ended by attaining dispassion. Nirodha extinguishes all forms of clinging and attachment. This means that suffering can be overcome through human activity, simply by removing the cause of suffering. Attaining and perfecting dispassion is a process of many levels that ultimately results in the state of Nirvana. Nirvana means freedom from all worries, troubles, complexes, fabrications and ideas. Nirvana is not comprehensible for those who have not attained it.

4. The path to the cessation of suffering.

There is a path to the end of suffering - a gradual path of self-improvement, which is described more detailed in the Eightfold Path. It is the middle way between the two extremes of excessive self-indulgence (hedonism) and excessive self-mortification (asceticism); and it leads to the end of the cycle of rebirth. The latter quality discerns it from other paths which are merely "wandering on the wheel of becoming", because these do not have a final object. The path to the end of suffering can extend over many lifetimes, throughout which every individual rebirth is subject to karmic conditioning. Craving, ignorance, delusions, and its effects will disappear gradually, as progress is made on the path.

DJ Underdog X Lunch Box Theory - Africa Plays On Pt. 3

In spirit of Lunch Box Theorys End of Summer Afrobeat party, DJ Underdog humbly and aggressively fuses of Nigerian, Cubanismo, Juju, Fete, Latin Jazz and many other genres of music together, to form his third mixtape, "Africa Plays On 3". Underdog stresses the importance of records in every production. You can even hear the crackle at points. Even though records are hard to come by, DJ Underdog makes it a point to use strictly records on every mixtape and during live sets. Certainly there is a wealth of rhythms, drums, congas, bongos – but the mark of African music is not just fire but smoke. Guitars, voices and drums echo tones and pulse so as to become indistinguishable; rather than sweltering abandon, a controlled, spacious intensity defines these grooves. Special drops from Questlove and DJ Rich Medina accompany this mix.

As is usually the case with African rhythms, the keening, reverberant mix of oddly tuned instruments gives Africa Plays On 3 an affecting charm. Through it all, DJ Underdogs mixes waft gently and purposefully, never allowing the kettle to boil over, all the while connecting modern Africa to its ancient tribal roots. Africa Plays On 3 is like some hazy, distant dream of communal ritual and peace. See you at the party"

Why Sleep? Snoozing May Be Strategy To Increase Efficiency, Minimize Risk

Bats, birds, box turtles, humans and many other animals share at least one thing in common: They sleep. Humans, in fact, spend roughly one-third of their lives asleep, but sleep researchers still don't know why.
According to the journal Science, the function of sleep is one of the 125 greatest unsolved mysteries in science. Theories range from brain "maintenance" — including memory consolidation and pruning — to reversing damage from oxidative stress suffered while awake, to promoting longevity. None of these theories are well established, and many are mutually exclusive.

Now, a new analysis by Jerome Siegel, UCLA professor of psychiatry and director of the Center for Sleep Research at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA and the Sepulveda Veterans Affairs Medical Center, has concluded that sleep's primary function is to increase animals' efficiency and minimize their risk by regulating the duration and timing of their behavior.

The research appears in the current online edition of the journal Nature Reviews Neuroscience.

"Sleep has normally been viewed as something negative for survival because sleeping animals may be vulnerable to predation and they can't perform the behaviors that ensure survival," Siegel said. These behaviors include eating, procreating, caring for family members, monitoring the environment for danger and scouting for prey.

"So it's been thought that sleep must serve some as-yet unidentified physiological or neural function that can't be accomplished when animals are awake," he said.

Siegel's lab conducted a new survey of the sleep times of a broad range of animals, examining everything from the platypus and the walrus to the echidna, a small, burrowing, egg-laying mammal covered in spines. The researchers concluded that sleep itself is highly adaptive, much like the inactive states seen in a wide range of species, starting with plants and simple microorganisms; these species have dormant states — as opposed to sleep — even though in many cases they do not have nervous systems. That challenges the idea that sleep is for the brain, said Siegel.

"We see sleep as lying on a continuum that ranges from these dormant states like torpor and hibernation, on to periods of continuous activity without any sleep, such as during migration, where birds can fly for days on end without stopping," he said.

Hibernation is one example of an activity that regulates behavior for survival. A small animal, Siegel noted, can't migrate to a warmer climate in winter. So it hibernates, effectively cutting its energy consumption and thus its need for food, remaining secure from predators by burrowing underground.

Sleep duration, then, is determined in each species by the time requirements of eating, the cost-benefit relations between activity and risk, migration needs, care of young, and other factors. However, unlike hibernation and torpor, Siegel said, sleep is rapidly reversible — that is, animals can wake up quickly, a unique mammalian adaptation that allows for a relatively quick response to sensory signals.

Humans fit into this analysis as well. What is most remarkable about sleep, according to Siegel, is not the unresponsiveness or vulnerability it creates but rather that ability to reduce body and brain metabolism while still allowing that high level of responsiveness to the environment.

"The often cited example is that of a parent arousing at a baby's whimper but sleeping through a thunderstorm," he said. "That dramatizes the ability of the sleeping human brain to continuously process sensory signals and trigger complete awakening to significant stimuli within a few hundred milliseconds."

In humans, the brain constitutes, on average, just 2 percent of total body weight but consumes 20 percent of the energy used during quiet waking, so these savings have considerable adaptive significance. Besides conserving energy, sleep invokes survival benefits for humans too — "for example," said Siegel, "a reduced risk of injury, reduced resource consumption and, from an evolutionary standpoint, reduced risk of detection by predators."

"This Darwinian perspective can explain age-related changes in human sleep patterns as well," he said. "We sleep more deeply when we are young, because we have a high metabolic rate that is greatly reduced during sleep, but also because there are people to protect us. Our sleep patterns change when we are older, though, because that metabolic rate reduces and we are now the ones doing the alerting and protecting from dangers."

Little Dragon>>>Machine Dreams Album Aug 31st!!!

This is the kind of group you want to do well. So proud of Yukimi and the group. I remember when Geo-logy told me to look out for her back in 2006. He wasn't jive'n. The much-anticipated second album, Machine Dreams from the lovely swedish soul-pop band Little Dragon is coming out on Peacefrog Records this month.

The new LP is a move forward to more electro-robotic sound but without loosing their intimate soulfulness. Yukimi Nagano is as magical as ever and now the edgy, uptempo beats are providing great context to her hypnotic voice. Each new track can be taken as a gem, though Feather (this will be the first official single), Looking Glass or Thunder Love purely radiate out of the whole. Fortune and Blinking Pigs have already been released on a single earlier this year. The album cover is designed by the Japenese artist Hideyuki Katsumata who also made the animation for LD’s nice Fortune video last year.

Tracklist:
1. A New
2. Looking Glass
3. My Step
4. Feather
5. Thunder Love
6. Never Never
7. Runabout
8. Swimming
9. Blingking Pigs
10. Come Home
11. Fortune (free official dl)
Machine Dreams is out 31, August on Peacefrog Records. Buy on sight!

Dangers of Drinking Juice "From Concetrate">>Must Read!

What does "from concentrate" mean and how does it affect the juice's nutrient profile?

"Juice made from concentrate is the same as the original juice" so they say. The only thing missing is most of the water. Extracting water reduces juice volume and weight, making it easier to ship. When water is added back to the concentrate, the product is labeled "reconstituted" or "made from concentrate" and has the same nutrition profile as the original juice. "As long as there has been no change in the juice other than water being removed and put back in, the label can identify the beverage as '100 percent juice from concentrate". Ha!

Why is apple, pear, or grape juice often the first ingredient in juices that aren't apple, pear, or grape?

Naturally sweet juices such as apple, pear, and grape help make especially tart or acidic juices more palatable. "It's a way of adding sugar without having to put 'sweetened with added sugar' or other sweeteners on the label,"says Adam Drewnowski, PhD, director of the Center for Public Health and Nutrition at the University of Washington in Seattle. For example, unadulterated cranberry juice is extremely tart and must be sweetened. What makes it tart? Antioxidants. "They are, almost without exception, bitter, acrid, or astringent," Drewnowski says. "The more antioxidants you have in a product, the more bitter it is going to be." The reason: Antioxidants are meant to protect the plant by making it taste bad to predators.

OK, so company's go through all these steps to preserve and make juice more "palatable", but doesn't the nutrient value of juice decrease or even better, disappear after being shipped for days if not months to bottling factories? I mean, if you're fresh-squeezing juice at home or buying in-store fresh-squeezed juice, fresh squeezed from home obviously has to offer a slight nutritional edge. Isn't that what we want?

Think of juice like BLOOD because in a sense, that's what it is. Remember that as soon as the juice is extracted from its source and comes into contact with air, it will start to deteriorate and lose vitamin and mineral content. Just like blood does when it is exposed to oxygen. It's the same logic. The trick that company's do to avoid that problem is called PRESERVATIVES. Food preservatives used during processing; prolong shelf life, improve food taste. Additives, simple substances like salt, sugar, artificial chemicals used as antioxidant, anti-microbial, artificial colors for better eye appeal. Currently there are over 3000 additives used in processing with different functions. Sheesh...3000...when did they even have time to come up with 3000. At any rate, say we consume 100 additives. Can you imagine how long it takes the body to figure out that we are consuming complete garbage. Not to mention that most people eat and drink at the same time. It's not like the preservatives can preserve your colon or your heart or your life. Most preservatives are able to last 7-9 years. I wonder how long they last in the human body?

These substances in foods can affect individuals who are sensitive with some type of allergy, asthma, hay fever, etc. Few of these can affect non-allergic people as well. Some substances can cause more reactions than others can. For example, responses to sulfur dioxide and sodium benzoate occurs more commonly in asthmatics than responses to the color tartrazine.

Some feel these responses are not true allergies as one sees but more as any chemical response. Reactions depend on the types of food preservatives used or additive ingested. These may include vomiting, rashes, hives, tight chest, headaches, worsening of eczema, and many other symptoms. Similar reactions may occur with an allergy to food such as egg, nuts, etc.

Some edibles have natural elements that may affect you too. For example, fish that is not fresh may have high levels or histamine, cheese may have tyramine, and you may react to the histamine in wine and not the sulfur dioxide!

Food preservatives may contain or release formaldehyde which is carcinogenic, neurotoxin, irritant and sensitizer. These include DMDM hydantoin, Imidazolidinyl urea, Diazolidinyl urea, quaternium 15, sodium hydroxymethylglycinate and bronopol (2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol). Other preservatives that may also cause reactions include the parabens, methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone.

Antioxidants stop fats and oils from going rancid; for instance, ascorbic acid in butter. BHA and the related compound butylate hydroxy toluene have been used for years, mostly in products that are high in fats and oils and as an preservative for dry types, such as cereals. They slow the development of off-flavors, odors, and color changes caused by oxidation. Some report problems of rashes, hives, and occasionally tight chests. Studies show this to cause tumors in fish, hamsters, mice and rats.

Artificial colors make food more colorful; two examples are tartrazine and sunset yellow. Tartrazine is dye, so if you react to this, you should avoid all of the dyes. Those that may contain this are fruit juices, soft drinks, sweets, desserts, toppings, syrup, cooking oils, sauces and pickles. Some of the artificial colors are derived from coal tar that causes cancer. They are also used in cosmetics and other personal care products.

Flavor enhancers bring out flavors in; well-known one is monosodium glutamate (MSG). Symptoms include headache, burning sensation along the back of the neck, chest tightness or pain, nausea, sweating, and sensations of facial pressure. Tingling may be experienced in the limbs or face.

The Hard Truth>>>

The very act of concentrating anything is to boil it down and evaporate the juice until it reaches a thick, syrupy liquid. The action itself kills any beneficial nutrients because if you heat anything over a certain temperature then the nutrients will start to wane. Heating anything over 120 degrees, what you can typically tolerate sipping, kills the enzymes in the food which are digestible, actually to help itself digest itself and break down. Does that make sense?

I know we get a little anal on this blog but these are things to consider. I wonder sometimes if the water used to "reconstite" the syrupy concentrate is even purified. Things to consider you know? That fact that we consume blindly with the trust of the manufactures is subject for debated. We are consumed by ideas not execution. The idea being the commercials and senseless trickery of major corporations in the food industry. How did we get so far away from the truth and so caught up in "just getting by? I think you know the answer.

Modern civilization doesn't allow time for you to make fresh juice everyday does it? You have no time do you? Or do we make excuses because we don't make time? Who is at fault? Sunkist never said you must drink our products or else. We made the choices that eventually will lead to health problems over time. You have to watch what you consume. There are no excuses now. Take care...Be well>>> Comment if you have any constructive insight>>>

n a small private garden in Münster this space hovers above a flat pool, framed by high bamboo stilts. The visitors reach the staircase across 3 natural-stone steps between water-lilies.

The terrace, made of tatajuba-wood, rests on four stainless-steel stilts and is big enough to relax comfortable on it. Some steps and a small catwalk lead the visitors to the cabin.

The curved cabin in the middle of the pool is covered with a zinc-sheet and lamellas of tatajuba-wood underneath. It rests on eight asymmetrical arranged stilts. Large curved glass at the gables and slim windows at the sides lighten the interior and give a bright and transparent look to the cabin.

Inside the visitors notice the big curved rooftop-window above the pale lying surface. Below the bench on the opposite side drawers give enough storage space. Walls, floor and furniture made of white-glazed ash underline the bright and minimalistic character of the interior.

Seasonal Spotlight: Strawberry Recipes

It is the peak of strawberry season, and we're on the lookout for the most amazing strawberry recipes. We've rounded up a few below for you to enjoy. Feel free to add any others you are particularly fond of in the comment section - we like to highlight recipes that are using whole grains, whole grain flours, whole ingredients, lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, minimally refined sweeteners, and the like - so keep that in mind if you post (or at the very least recommend substitutions).

Strawberries. As if their fragrant, juicy sweetness wasn't reason enough to enjoy these heart-shaped gems, strawberries are packed with potent phyto-nutrients and health-promoting antioxidants. When you are buying strawberries be on vigilant mold alert. Be sure to peek in the bottom of the basket, or hold berry baskets up high and look underneath - a single moldy berry seems to be contagious to the whole lot. Also, keep in mind, strawberries are one of the crops where pesticide residue is most likely to be found. Buy organic berries, or berries that have been grown without pesticides.
