Pao Pereira

The Graviola tree produces a large, edible fruit that and is used in natural medicine in the tropics (including the bark, leaves, roots, fruit, and seeds). In its indigenous use, Graviola is taken in different forms for parasites, fevers, diarrhea, diabetes, as a sedative and heart tonic as well as for liver problems and arthritis pain.
In 1976 the National Cancer Institute conducted a plant screening program in which graviola leaves and stem showed active toxicity against cancer cells. Since that time, Graviola has been the subject of various clinical research. Research show specific acetogenins in Graviola, and/or extracts of Graviola, have been reported to be selectively toxic in vitro to certain types of tumor cells including: lung carcinoma cell lines; human breast solid tumor lines; prostate adenocarcinoma; pancreatic carcinoma cell lines; colon adenocarcinoma cell lines; liver cancer cell lines; human lymphoma cell lines; and multi-drug resistant human breast adenocarcinoma.
Researchers in Taiwan reported In 2003 one study reported that the main Graviola acetogenin (annonacin) was highly toxic to ovarian, cervical, breast, bladder and skin cancer cell lines, saying; “. . . annonacin is a promising anti-cancer agent and worthy of further animal studies and, we would hope, clinical trials.”
In March of 2002 researchers in Japan studied various acetogenins found in several species of plants. On mice inoculated with lung cancer cells: 1/3 received no treatment (control group), 1/3 received a chemotherapy drug (Adriamycin), and 1/3 received the main Graviola acetogenin. After two weeks, five of the six in the control group were still alive. The Adriamycin group showed a 54.6% reduction of tumor mass over the control group, however half of the animals had died from toxicity. The mice receiving annonacin were all alive, the tumors were reduced by 57.9%, and without toxicity. The research group summarized; “This suggested that annonacin was less toxic in mice. On considering the antitumor activity and toxicity, annonacin might be used as a lead to develop a potential anticancer agent.”
Current Practical Graviola Uses
Pharmaceutical companies and universities continue to research, test, patent, and attempt to synthesize these chemicals into new chemotherapy drugs. It has taken researchers ten years to successfully chemically reproduce the main anti-tumorous chemical in Graviola (annonacin). Now that scientists are able to recreate this chemical in the laboratory, they have to change the chemical slightly (without losing any of the anti-tumorous actions) to become a chemical which can be patented for a new patented cancer drug, because naturally occurring plant chemicals cannot be patented.
Currently many health practitioners and cancer patients are adding natural Graviola leaf and stem as a complementary therapy to their existing cancer treatments. Graviola has a long, safe history as a herbal remedy for many conditions, and research suggests that the anti-tumorous acetogenins are toxic to only cancer cells and not healthy cells.
Important: research confirms that these acetogenins also occur in high amounts in Graviola seeds and roots, however different alkaloid chemicals in the seeds and roots have shown preliminary in vitro neurotoxic effects. Therefore, using the seeds and root of Graviola is not recommended at this time.
The therapuetic dosage of Graviola leaf is reported to be 2-3 grams taken 3-4 times daily.

△△△How To Get Rid of a the "common" Cold with Natural Herbs△△△

First- Cold is what you feel when you do not have enough heat molecules. Therefore I can legally say that there is no such thing as "cold".

Four different categories of herbs are utilised to help combat the common cold.

Herbs that stimulate the immune system to fight the infection are used during and possibly to prevent colds. Echinacea and Asian ginseng are two examples in this category.

Second, herbs that promote a mild fever, hence sweating (known as diaphoretics) may be useful. Because a fever is a sign of the immune system working, it may be that diaphoretics are also immune stimulators like the first category. Elder, boneset and yarrow are three examples.

The third category includes herbs that may directly kill the viruses that cause colds, based on test tube studies. Goldenseal, myrrh and usnea are examples.

Finally, some herbs are used just to alleviate symptoms such as sore throats. These herbs tend to be high in mucilage and are soothing and anti-inflammatory or have tannins that are astringent. Marshmallow and red raspberry are two examples. Symptom-relieving herbs may have other active constituents and mechanisms of actions. As you can see in the following list, many herbs fit in more than one category, such as goldenseal (immune stimulating and antiviral).

Immune-stimulating:
Asian ginseng, astragalus, boneset, echinacea, eleuthero, goldenseal, hyssop, linden, schisandra, wild indigo.

Diaphoretic:
Boneset, elder flower, hyssop, linden, yarrow.

Symptom-relieving Astringent (soothe sore throat):
Blackberry, blueberry, red raspberry.

Mucilage (soothe sore throat):
Marshmallow, mullein.

Reduce nasal stuffiness:
Eucalyptus, peppermint.

Relieve aches and pains:
Meadowsweet.

Miscellaneous sore throat relief:
Sage, yarrow.

Diseased seals in Alaska tested for radiation>??

Scientists in Alaska are investigating whether local seals arebeing sickened by radiation from Japan's crippled Fukushima nuclearplant.
Scores of ring seals have washed up on Alaska's Arctic coastlinesince July, suffering or killed by a mysterious disease marked bybleeding lesions on the hind flippers, irritated skin around thenose and eyes and patchy hair loss on the animals' fur coats.
Biologists at first thought the seals were suffering from avirus, but they have so far been unable to identify one, and testsare now underway to find out if radiation is a factor.
"We recently received samples of seal tissue from diseasedanimals captured near St Lawrence Island with a request to examinethe material for radioactivity," said John Kelley, ProfessorEmeritus at the Institute of Marine Science at the University ofAlaska Fairbanks.
"There is concern expressed by some members of the localcommunities that there may be some relationship to the Fukushimanuclear reactor's damage," he said.
The results of the tests would not be available for "severalweeks," Kelley said.
Water tests have not picked up any evidence of elevatedradiation in US Pacific waters since the March earthquake andtsunami in Japan, which caused multiple fuel meltdowns at theFukushima plant and forced tens of thousands of people to evacuatethe surrounding area.
Scientists from the National Oceanic and AtmosphericAdministration and the US Fish and Wildlife Service have beenseeking the cause of the diseased seals for weeks, but have so farfound no answers.

I Wayne first made a splash in 2004 after the release of "Can't Satisfy Her"; with his messages of peace and love, he's largely credited with bringing the roots and rock back to mainstream reggae. Starting with "Real and Clean," from his recent Life Teachings, he captivated us with his smooth voice, supported only by an acoustic guitar. Then he got the NPR audience grooving with "Can't Satisfy Her," which closed with the crowd singing the words to the chorus. It might have been a rainy day outside, but I Wayne still brought island warmth into our office, even if only for a few minutes.

More Than Fruit|| New Facts about Pomegranites

What I find odd is that the pomegranate fruit has been around for centuries and has been grown and eaten all over the Middle East and Asia and even AFRICA. Our ancestors hold the fruit in high esteem and at the time the fruit was seen as a symbol of life, health and fertility. Now it seems to me that the ancients seemed to know something all those centuries ago that we are only finding out now. So what seems to be the important benefits that is being attributed to this fruit:

Protection against heart problems and disease.
Pomegranates in some of the clinical tests have shown to help lower the levels of bad LDL cholesterol in the blood as well as helping to lower high blood pressure. If this is true then this can greatly reduce a persons chances of having heart problems or a stroke.

Protection against some cancers.
For me one of the greatest benefits pomegranates might hold is that it has shown to help fight certain cancers. The fruit has high levels of flavanoids which is an antioxidant. This type of antioxidant is known to help fight against free radicals. The clinical tests have shown the fruit to help against prostate and breast cancers.

Oral hygiene.
Some test results has shown that drinking pomegranate juice regularly can help reduce dental plague and gum disease. This is important because more people are suffering from these conditions nowadays due to the extra salts and sugars being added to food.
These are just three pomegranate health benefits that I thought should get a mention. I would like to point out that none of the results from the tests have been found to be conclusive. These are just some of the results that the medical industry have released. These early results do look impressive and I do hope that the results the fruit has shown against cancer are found to be true.

These times are also set up by seasons. Autumn Equinox, Winter Solstice, Spring and Summer Solstice. You must fast at all 4 cycles to be in balance and in tune with The Creator, You’re Self, Nature, Earth, and the Universes. So based upon when you are born - You are either governed by the sun or moon- meaning its source and power was more dominated during your birth cycle. And certain minerals and vitamins and life force energy was present or missing doing this time. And you would need to take in those provisions to balance your self out...Keep in mind there are thousands of Fasting techniques out there and you must use what ever you feel comfortable with. This process deals more with tapping in to the aspiciousness of the moment and time to bring balance then cultivation. These organs are important because they work harmoniously in the detect process t eliminate waste from your system. The kidneys filter blood to a balance between water and the body’s acidity level. They help your system keep the right amount of vitamins and minerals while helping to pull out elements like nitrogen, minerals, salts, and unwanted chemicals. Did you know that in one day the kidney filters thousands quarts of blood, of which approximately 160 quarts of fluid are extracted for one another filtering, process? When your kidney is not is stressed or weakened, their lack of energy ripples throughout your body. Your skin is forced to do double work to help with the elimination process, which causes rashes and other skin conditions to appear. One of the biggest challenges you will face during this time is stress. Stress whether its environmental, emotional, physical or spiritually. Is Wi-Fi frying our brains? Fears that cloud of 'electrosmog' could be harming humans

As winter arrives with a vengeance, the last of this year’s glorious autumn leaves are falling in our parks and woodlands.

But this week came worrying evidence that Mother Nature is not the only force denuding our trees of their foliage.

Research in the Netherlands suggested that outbreaks of bleeding bark and dying leaves which have blighted the country’s urban trees may be caused by radiation from the Wi-Fi networks now so integral to life in offices, schools and homes.

As a qualified electronics engineer, I am not surprised by such findings. I have long been concerned about the harmful effects of the electro-magnetic radiation emitted not only by Wi-Fi devices but many other common modern gadgets, including mobile and cordless phones, wireless games consoles and microwave ovens.

Much though I love trees, and worrying though I find this research, what really unnerves me is the effect these electro-magnetic fields (or EMFs) are having on humans, surrounding us as they do with a constant cloud of ‘electrosmog’.

I am no Luddite. When I started work in the 1960s, I was involved in building walkie-talkies. I thought they were just brilliant and that electronic technology would save the world. But over the decades since, my scientific background has made it impossible for me to ignore the overwhelming evidence about the damage wreaked by this electrosmog.

It is not the existence of these radio waves that is the problem so much as the use we make of them. Rather than being emitted at a constant rate, technology demands they are ‘pulsed’ in short and frequent bursts which appear to be far more biologically harmful.
Not the least is their impact on our ability to reproduce. It is well documented that average male sperm counts are falling by two per cent a year. Many causes have been suggested, from stressful lifestyles to poor diet and hormones in our water supplies.
But studies in infertility clinics show problems with sperm dying off or not moving properly are most common in men who use mobiles extensively. This has also been demonstrated in the laboratory.
Mobiles are not the only problem. Many laptops are now equipped with Wi-Fi which sends out pulses every second as it maintains contact with the nearest access point. Young men with these devices on their laps are submitting their testicles to strong EMFs at close range, oblivious to the damage they may be doing to their chances of future fatherhood.
EMFS have also been shown to affect the brain, suppressing production of melatonin, the hormone controlling whether we feel happy or sad. In 2004, researchers at the University of Malaga found that significant exposure to EMFs increases the chances of developing depression 40-fold.
They also linked electrosmog to headaches, irritability, unusual tiredness and sleeping disorders.
This has been confirmed in research by the respected Karolinska Institute in Sweden. Sponsored by the leading mobile phone companies, it showed that using handsets just before going to bed caused people to take longer to reach deeper stages of sleep. They also spent less time in each of these stages, so interfering with the body’s ability to repair damage suffered during the day.

This is particularly alarming given the tendency for teenagers and children to sleep with their mobile phones under the pillows so that they can answer late-night texts from friends.
Parents who allow their children to do so may be taking a significant gamble with their health.
This year saw the publication of the Interphone study carried out in 13 countries including the UK, and examining the links between mobile phone use and brain tumours. It suggested that those who had made heavy use of mobiles for a decade or more faced twice the risk of glioma, the most common type of brain tumour.
And this was a study based on the period between 1994 and 2004 when ‘heavy’ usage was defined as two to three hours per month. A conservative estimate of average mobile phone use now is approximately half an hour a day, seven days a week.
Since brain tumours often develop very slowly it may be many years before the full impact of our reliance on mobiles becomes clear. But they are already implicated in another area of concern to health professionals, the onset of dementia in those under 65.
Experts are at a loss to explain the increase in this condition which has seen a surge in demand for pre-senile dementia units across the country. But can we really be surprised when a study at the Institute of Environmental Medicine in Sweden confirmed this month that exposure to EMFs significantly accelerates brain degeneration?

The risks posed by EMFs are recognised not only by scientists, but hard-headed commercial organisations. In 1997, the insurance company Swiss-Re identified EMFs as likely to cause the biggest increase in claims in years to come. Swiss-Re and other insurers have therefore refused to indemnify the mobile phone operators against health claims from their customers.
Even so, we should not hold out much hope of our politicians protecting us from EMFs. The mobile phone industry in the UK contributes around £20 billion in tax every year, so it’s hardly likely the Government will take action to reduce the number of calls.
Indeed, it seems to be going in almost the opposite direction, encouraging the installation of Wi-Fi networks in our schools with tactics which sometimes verge on coercion. I’ve been told about a school which was threatened that it would receive no further government funding for computer technology if it did not install Wi-Fi.

In the absence of official intervention, it’s down to all of us to protect ourselves. My aim as a campaigner is not to scare people but inform them about the risks, so they can choose to take precautions.
Not everyone will want to follow my example. Because of our concerns about electrosmog, my wife and I have moved to a cottage in Scotland out of range of any mobile phone network.
But there are small steps which we can all take. We should all try to use hands-free sets. And women should stop carrying mobiles in their bras (breast tissue being particularly susceptible to mobile phone microwaves), a trend which is becoming alarmingly fashionable.
We should also avoid cordless phones. Their base stations transmit 100 pulses a second, 24/7, even if you’re not using the phone, and at power levels equivalent to having a small mobile phone mast in your home.
You might also consider whether you really need wireless internet access in your home. One option is to buy dLAN adaptors which transmit the internet signal around the house by way of your ordinary electrical wiring.
Such changes will require small adjustments to our modern lifestyles. But until the evidence against EMFs is proven or disproven, these are surely sacrifices well worth making.

Walnut Trees May Not Be Able to Withstand Climate Change

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2011) — Warmer, drier summers and extreme weather events considered possible as the climate changes would be especially troublesome -- possibly fatal -- for walnut trees, according to research at Purdue University.

Over five years, Douglass Jacobs, a professor of forestry and natural resources, and Martin-Michel Gauthier, a former doctoral student under Jacobs who is now a research scientist in the Ministry of Natural Resources in Quebec, studied the physiology of walnut trees, which are economically significant in Indiana for their lumber and veneer, and in other areas for their nuts. They found that the trees are especially sensitive to particular climates.
"Walnut is really restricted to sites not too wet or dry. It has an extremely narrow range," said Jacobs, whose findings were published in the December issue of Annals of Forest Science. "We suspect and predict that climate change is going to have a real impact on walnuts. We may see some type of decline of the species."
Specifically, walnuts would have difficulty tolerating droughts that could be associated with a changing climate.
"Changes in moisture could restrict its ability to survive without irrigation," Jacobs said. "Almost all climate change models predict that climates will become drier."
Walnuts are also sensitive to cold, so much so that they have developed a defense mechanism against late frosts. Jacobs said walnut trees don't begin sprouting leaves until almost a month after other trees in the spring.
That defense mechanism could be compromised by extreme weather events associated with climate change scenarios. Late spring frosts after walnuts have developed leaves could kill trees.
"That, on top of the increase in temperatures, would be a problem for walnut," Gauthier said. "The trees would basically shut down."
In California, more than 500,000 tons of walnuts were sold for more than $1 billion in 2010, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
In Indiana, black walnuts are prized for their wood. Charles Michler, project leader of Purdue's Hardwood Tree Improvement and Regeneration Center, said walnuts accounted for as much as 15 percent of the logs sold in Indiana at a value of about $11 million.
"Walnut is probably the most important species in the hardwood products industry today," Michler said.
The center has a walnut breeding program that is attempting to identify trees that can be used in different climates, he said.
One goal is to find walnuts that may be able to stand up to the heat or cold stresses that trees could be subject to in a changing climate. The center is looking at seeds that come from mature trees to see if the seeds have attained defense mechanisms against changes already seen in climate.
"That could be the strategy that trees have," Michler said. "The trees that are mature now may be affected by climate change, but the seeds they produce may be adapting through genetic changes."

◥◥Tropical Forests Fertilized by Nitrogen Air Pollution, Scientists Find

ScienceDaily (Nov. 3, 2011) — Scientists braved ticks and a tiger to discover how human activities have perturbed the nitrogen cycle in tropical forests. Studies at two remote Smithsonian Institution Global Earth Observatory sites in Panama and Thailand show the first evidence of long-term effects of nitrogen pollution in tropical trees.

"Air pollution is fertilizing tropical forests with one of the most important nutrients for growth," said S. Joseph Wright, staff scientist at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama. "We compared nitrogen in leaves from dried specimens collected in 1968 with nitrogen in samples of new leaves collected in 2007. Leaf nitrogen concentration and the proportion of heavy to light nitrogen isotopes increased in the last 40 years, just as they did in another experiment when we applied fertilizer to the forest floor."
Nitrogen is an element created in stars under high temperatures and pressures. Under normal conditions, it is a colorless, odorless gas that does not readily react with other substances. Air consists of more than 75% nitrogen. But nitrogen also plays a big role in life as an essential component of proteins. When nitrogen gas is zapped by lightning, or absorbed by soil bacteria called "nitrogen fixers," it is converted into other "active" forms that can be used by animals and plants. Humans fix nitrogen by the Haber process, which converts nitrogen gas into ammonia -- now a principal ingredient in fertilizers. Today, nitrogen fixation by humans has approximately doubled the amount of reactive nitrogen emitted.
Nitrogen comes in two forms or isotopes: atoms that have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. In the case of nitrogen, the isotopes are ¹⁴N and ¹⁵N, although only about one in 300 nitrogen atoms is the heavier form. Imagine nitrogen in the ecosystem like a bowl of popcorn. Normally the ratio of popped (light) to unpopped (heavy) kernels stays the same, but when someone starts to eat the popcorn, the lighter, popped kernels get used up first, increasing the ratio of heavy to light kernels (or ¹⁵N/¹⁴N in the case of the ecosystem). Light nitrogen is lost through nitrate leaching and as gases such as N2, and various forms of nitrous oxides or "noxides," some of which can be important greenhouse gases. In the fertilization study in Panama, mentioned earlier, N₂O emissions were tripled.
"Tree rings provide a handy timeline for measuring changes in wood nitrogen content," said Peter Hietz from the Institute of Botany at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna, who faced down a tiger when sampling trees in a monsoon forest on the Thailand-Myanmar border. "We find that over the last century, there's an increase in the heavier form of nitrogen over the lighter form, which tells us that there is more nitrogen going into this system and higher losses. We also got the same result in an earlier study of tree rings in Brazilian rainforests, so it looks like nitrogen fixed by humans now affects some of the most remote areas in the world."
"The results have a number of important implications," said Ben Turner, staff scientist at STRI. "The most obvious is for trees in the bean family (Fabaceae), a major group in tropical forests that fix their own nitrogen in association with soil bacteria. Increased nitrogen from outside could take away their competitive advantage and make them less common, changing the composition of tree communities."
"There are also implications for global change models, which are beginning to include nitrogen availability as a factor affecting the response of plants to increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations," said Turner. "Most models assume that higher nitrogen equals more plant growth, which would remove carbon from the atmosphere and offset future warming. However a challenge for the models is that there is no evidence that trees are growing faster in Panama, despite the long-term increases in nitrogen deposition and atmospheric carbon dioxide."
Decades of atmospheric nitrogen deposition have caused major changes in the plants and soils of temperate forests in the U.S. and Europe. Whether tropical forests will face similar consequences is an important question for future research.

Akhdam women tell their stories of violence, injustice & poverty in Yemen

The video chronicles the lives and injustices against the Akhdam women in Yemen. The 'Akhdam' , singular Khadem, meaning "servant" in Arabic, are a social group in Yemen, distinct from the majority by their darker skin and African descent. Although they are Arabic-speaking and practicing Muslims, they are regarded as non-Arabs and designated as a low caste group, frequently discriminated against and confined to unskilled and menial labor. In a society already riddled with patriarchy and poverty, the distain and discrimination against the Akhdam renders Akhdam women easy targets of violence and abuse. Akhdam women are subject to hate-based attacks and sexual assaults without any type of legal or social recourse.

The Akhdam, a social group in Yemen are said to be the descendents of a pre-Islamic Ethiopian army that invaded Yemen more than 1500 years ago. They remained in the country as slaves and servants once the occupation ended, and subsequently became the lowest rung in the Imamate's caste system. When the Imam was overthrown during the revolution in 1962 slavery in Yemen was officially abolished, yet the stigma of being a member of the “Akhdam” remains. Set apart by their African features, they face much discrimination, and are mostly confined to menial labor. Most of the Akhdam live in slums, known as 'mahwa', on the outskirts of Yemen's largest cities.

And that's just tampons…
Many women use countless sanitary pads in place of, or in addition to tampons. When this same 'average' woman has a baby, she might also use maternity and nursing pads.
Something you wear so intimately and with such regularity, wouldn't you want to know for sure it's safe? You may be thinking, what could possibly not be safe with feminine hygiene products?
They're whiter-than-white pure and clean, right?
This is an area that I admittedly haven't previously been very involved with until recently. After thoroughly investigating the topic, I have to admit I was shocked.
In my opinion, the realm of feminine hygiene is like a "ticking time bomb."
And for you men out there, don't go away just yet.

Why Feminine Hygiene Products May NOT Be
"Protecting" In All Respects

Are there potential, unsuspected risks from feminine hygiene products? For decades, women have trusted their favorite feminine hygiene products to protect them from leaks.
And certainly, when you scan feminine hygiene product ads, "protection" does seem to be today's buzzword.
No doubt, you receive absorbency protection. In fact, that's something the FDA ensures.
However, could it be that in the process of "protecting" you from leaks, your feminine hygiene products may potentially be subjecting you to an unexpected risk?
A risk that you never bargained for – or haven't been warned about.
The good news is… it's a potential risk that you can avoid, if you so choose.
I bet that after you discover what I've learned, you'll never think about "protection" the same way again.

The Largest – and Most Absorbent Organ in Your Body

Your skin is the largest organ in your body. And it happens to be the most absorbent.
A substance you place on your skin may be able to pass right through it, straight into your bloodstream.
Take hormonal or seasickness patches for example. They work because your skin absorbs most of what it comes in contact with.
Vaginal tissue — an exceptionally absorbent area – is no exception.
Because of your vagina's ability to absorb substances, healthy or otherwise, it is a sound health practice to give your skin – and your most intimate areas – the same thoughtful care you give your internal organs. You certainly wouldn't deliberately eat toxins that might harm you.

How Today's Feminine Hygiene Products
May Be Jeopardizing Your Health

When asked what their tampons and sanitary pads are made from, I'm guessing most women would respond "cotton".
In my opinion, the feminine hygiene industry has done a terrific job deceiving and misinforming women, freely using words such as "cotton-soft" and "cottony feel" in slick advertising campaigns.
The truth is, today's feminine hygiene products are made mostly from rayon, vicose, and cellulose wood fluff pulp… and not from cotton.
And that just may be the source of the problem…

Rayon is made from cellulose fibers derived from bleached wood pulp.
Viscose is a form of wood cellulose acetate that's fabricated to have a pleasing cotton-like touch.
Fluff pulp is manufactured from tree wood and is the major filler used in conventional sanitary pads.

Don't be fooled. None of these tree-derived substances come close to natural cotton.
Rayon and viscose present a potential danger in part because of their highly absorbent fibers. When used in tampons, these fibers can stick to your vaginal wall, and when you remove the tampon, the loosened fibers stay behind inside your body.
Take a moment and try this quick experiment. Grab one of your tampons and remove it from its wrapper and applicator. Pull it open flat. Give the inside fibers a tug with your fingers.
Notice how the fibers begin to break apart? Do this over a dark piece of cloth or paper, and you'll notice lint and dusty fiber particles falling from the tampon.
These are the fibers that may stay behind in your body when you remove a tampon.

How the Toxic Bleaching Process Could Affect Your Health

A by-product of industry and pesticides, Dioxin is a close relative of poisonous Agent Orange Rayon is most commonly bleached with chlorine.
And whenever you bleach something with chlorine, there is a possibility of creating the toxic carcinogens, dioxin and disinfection-by-products (DBP's) such as trihalomethane.
Dioxin, in the same family as Agent Orange, is found in the air, water, and ground, thanks to decades of pollution.
It's a by-product of pesticide spraying, pollution from incinerators, and the production of paper and rayon products such as coffee filters, toilet paper, disposable diapers, and even possibly, feminine hygiene products.
Studies show that dioxin collects in the fatty tissues of animals and humans. And published reports show that even low or trace levels of dioxins may be linked to:

Abnormal tissue growth in the abdomen and reproductive organs
Abnormal cell growth throughout the body
Immune system suppression
Hormonal and endocrine system disruption

Do YOUR Tampons and Pads Contain Dioxin and
Chlorine Disinfection By-Products?

A recently released draft report by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) labels dioxin a serious public health threat. The EPA report states there is no "safe" level of exposure to dioxin – even trace amounts are a risk as they accumulate in tissue.
And dioxin has an "extremely long half-life" in that it may remain in your body for as long as 7 to 11 years. There's no consensus on the exact number as it may vary depending upon your percentage of body fat.
The FDA's official stand regarding trace amounts of dioxins is this: There's no health risk expected from any trace amount of dioxins in tampons.
I don't fully agree with this. In my opinion, the mere possibility of any trace levels of dioxin in pads and tampons may be a concern, considering the repeated contact with delicate and absorbent vaginal tissue.
In fact, a leading doctor of microbiology and immunology at a major university medical center has stated "dioxins, though they exist in the environment, have a worse effect when they contact mucous surfaces like the vagina."
However, you will likely not hear much about this issue as surprisingly the FDA has concluded that there is no health risk expected from dioxins in tampons and pads. According to the FDA…

"State-of-the-art testing of tampons and tampon materials that can detect even trace amounts of dioxin has shown that dioxin levels are at or below the detectable limit."

The FDA Statement on Tampons and Asbestos, Dioxin and Toxic Shock Syndrome further states:

"While there may have been a problem in the past with chlorine bleaching, rayon raw material used in U.S. tampons is now produced using elemental chlorine-free or totally chlorine-free bleaching processes."

What exactly are these "chlorine-free bleaching processes" that they use today? Let's take a closer look…
The FDA goes on to explain…

"Elemental chlorine-free bleaching refers to methods that do not use elemental chlorine gas to purify the wood pulp. These methods include the use of chlorine dioxide as the bleaching agent as well as totally chlorine-free processes. Some elemental chlorine-free bleaching processes can theoretically generate dioxins at extremely low levels, and dioxins are occasionally detected in trace amounts in mill effluents and pulp." (Emphasis added)

More Than Just Potential Dioxin and Disinfection By-Products…
You May Find Petrochemicals in Tampons, too

Consider the applicator used in your favorite brand of tampon. If it's plastic, you're exposing your body to plastic material every time you insert a tampon, and that plastic could potentially be dangerous.
If it's cardboard, take a moment to notice the nice glossy finish that makes it smooth to the touch.
That shiny finish comes from phthalates – chemical plasticizers used in many items, including pills, children's toys, medical devices and personal care products, such as perfumes, liquid soap, nail polish and hair spray.
Phthalates, along with many plastics, are known "endocrine disruptors" because they interfere with normal endocrine system function – potentially leading to obesity and birth defects.

The NEW Generation of Potentially Toxic Sanitary Pads

As for sanitary pads, today we're seeing a whole new generation of products made from petrochemicals.
Conventional sanitary pads are made from over 90 percent plastic derived from crude oil, including superabsorbent polyacrylates, polypropylene and polyethylene.
Synthetics and plastic restrict the free flow of air and can trap heat and dampness, potentially promoting the growth of yeast and bacteria in your vaginal area.
Labels such as "non-woven" are just fancy-talk for petrochemicals. These types of pads likely don't allow air to pass through.
The use of synthetic fibers, plastic-backed panty liners, and contact with toxic chemicals can lead to burning and soreness of delicate tissue in certain individuals, especially if you are susceptible to allergies.

Why Feminine Hygiene Manufacturers Haven't Told You About This

Many of these products have been used for decades. Why haven't you heard of these potential dangers before now?
First off, logically, the manufacturers are unlikely to tell you given their interest in selling their product. And, the sanitary pad industry is not required to disclose ingredients, including chemicals used in the manufacturing process.
Manufacturers frequently hire their own researchers to conduct research. And, sadly, those research results are all that the FDA sees, regardless of outcome.
In fact, the FDA's reassurances to the public are based on the data given to them by the product manufactures themselves.
Just as it's documented in the drug industry, the feminine hygiene industry can, in theory, spin the results of their "research" to whatever they want.
Incidentally, the Tampon Safety and Research Act of 1999 called upon the U.S. Congress to require independent testing of feminine hygiene products and a disclosure of ingredients used in the manufacturing process.
To date, no tests have been conducted and there's still no public disclosure of all the ingredients used.

Another Potential Problem with Tampons You Need to Know About…

KNOW These Warning Signs of TSS!

Toxic Shock Syndrome can be a potentially life-threatening condition.
Seek medical help if these symptoms arise while using tampons during your period:

Sudden high fever
Vomiting or diarrhea
Low blood pressure
Seizures
Rash on palms or soles
Muscle aches
Redness of your eyes, mouth and throat

The fibers left behind by from rayon, viscose, and fluff pulp in tampons may contribute to another hazard as well.
Tampons can create a favorable environment for bacteria growth.
Micro tears in the vaginal wall from tampons allow bacteria to enter and accumulate.
Super absorbent tampons are especially dangerous, as they can expand so much they may actually stick to the vaginal wall.
When the tampon is removed, a layer of the vaginal lining may be scraped or peeled off.
One recognized risk from tampon use is Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS).
TSS may be caused by poisonous toxins from either Staphylococcus aureus (staph) or group A streptococcus (strep) bacteria.

Reducing your risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)

Any tampon can create a friendly environment in your vagina to the growth of these two types of bacteria. However, there are several steps you can take to minimize your risk of this potentially life-threatening condition:

Avoid super absorbent tampons - choose the lowest absorbency rate to handle your flow
Alternate the use of tampons with sanitary napkins or mini-pads during your period
Never leave a tampon inserted overnight; use overnight pads instead
Change tampons at least every 4-6 hours
When inserting a tampon, be extremely careful not to scratch your vaginal lining (avoid plastic applicators).
Do not use a tampon between periods

Why Naturally Grown Cotton May Become Your New Best Friend

"Natural" cotton is cotton without dioxins and chlorine by-products. Hydrogen peroxide replaces any chlorine-containing substances used in the bleaching process.
Natural cotton has many benefits…

Unlike synthetic materials, natural cotton allows your skin to breathe while air flows easily through the cotton fibers.

I have to warn you, however… Once you experience the feel of natural cotton, you may never want to go back to synthetics.
When you step up to natural cotton, you may be lending the environment a hand, too.
Instead of tree farmed wood fluff pulp to make the absorbent cores of sanitary pads, natural cotton pads use sustainable natural cotton, saving countless trees from destruction.
Cotton can be harvested once a year, whereas trees take 6 to 12 years to grow.

Taking it one step further for intimate use –
Why ORGANIC cotton matters

Organic cotton is grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, and synthetic fertilizers There may be times when you want the extra assurance of organic cotton.
Especially when you're using a product for intimate use – that is, inside your body – or anywhere else you don't want potentially toxic ingredients.
All cotton sold as organic in the United States must meet strict federal regulations regarding how the cotton is grown, including the type of seeds used.
The organic cotton industry strictly forbids the use of genetically modified (GM) seeds.
Another important benefit of organic cotton is its impact on the environment.
According to the USDA, cotton is the third most heavily insecticide/herbicide treated U.S. crop (behind corn and soy), making it very detrimental to the environment.
In fact, the conventional, non-organic cotton industry uses a full fourth of the world's insecticides.
Consider this…
According to the Sustainable Cotton Project in California, nearly a third of a pound of chemicals is required to make ONE t-shirt from typically treated cotton!
What's more, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency classifies nine of the most common pesticides used on cotton as highly toxic and five are considered probable carcinogens by the U.S. EPA.
And it's these types of pesticides, along with synthetic fertilizers, that are often linked to groundwater contamination, a primary source of drinking water for many U.S. households.
To be fair, we really don't know how much of these toxic residues end up on the finished products you and I use. However, in my opinion, I believe in reducing potential exposure whenever – and wherever possible.

Why Organic Cotton is NOT Big Business Cotton

Organic cotton is grown without the use of toxic fungicides, pesticides, herbicides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation or genetic engineering.
Rather, organic farming production systems replenish and help maintain soil fertility while enhancing biodiversity that helps protect air and water.
Organic cotton is not "Big Business". When you support organic cotton, you're helping to support small independently owned and operated family farms.
Naturally, you can expect to pay a little more for organic cotton. But, I think you'll agree a few extra cents is worth it when it comes to protecting your health against potential toxins.

Did you know that, compared to other fruits and vegetables, apples have been found to be most consistently associated with a reduced risk of cancer, heart disease, asthma and type 2 diabetes? Apples, which contain significant amounts of phenols and other flavonoids, which act as powerful antioxidants and help protect against cell-damaging free radicals, were also associated with improved lung function and weight loss. These findings are from a recent review of 85 different studies. The total antioxidant activity of 100 grams of whole apple (with peel) was found to be equivalent to the antioxidant effect of about 1,500 mg of vitamin C! Most of apples' antioxidant protection, however, does not come from vitamin C (100 g of apples contains only about 5.7 mg of vitamin C), but from their rich supply of phytonutrients.
