The Building Block of the Brain

Our brain is primarily fat, 60% by dry weight! Few people realize how important fat is to a healthy brain. And DHA, the most plentiful fatty acid in the brain, is crucial to brain health, from infancy to old age.

If we eat excessive sugar in the form of highly refined carbohydrates as well as hydrogenated oils foods, this do not contribute to brain health. Oxidized fats are toxic to the body. Our diet is a critical factor to healthy brain function. A good rule of thumb is this: avoid processed foods. Duh!!!! Natural foods like Olives, cold-pressed olive oil, raw nuts and seeds cold-water fish(by choice), and avocados have Omega-3 essential fatty acids that the body and brain need for healthy function. So, what should you eat? Overall, fish(by choice), nuts, seeds are good brain nutrients.

Even if you look at the shape of most nuts and seeds its a giveaway of its function. Wall nuts look like the brain as well as cashews and other pods. Hence, celery looks like bones and is good for cartilage as does carrots look like the eyes and are good for that. BE WISER folks. Nature tells us everything we need to know.

http://www.baltcoffee.com/catalog/images/nuts.jpg

So are eggs and red meat but there's a downside there. Eggs and red meat are high in choline and initial investigation says "extra choline in the adult diet boosts brainpower," but eggs are high in cholesterol and meat is not good for the intestinal tract. Therefore, you should eat them sparingly or not at all. You can, however, obtain the choline you need through a good supplement. This is doubly important as choline is one of the forerunners for acetylcholine; it's a critical neurotransmitter needed for healthy brain function.

When looking for nuts, look for those with a high Omega 3 content. Almonds are an excellent choice. Which fish should you choose if you ARE NOT VEGAN? Look for cold-water fish like tuna, mackerel, and salmon.

Limit your intake of fish due to high contamination of toxins like dioxins, PCBs, and even mercury! If you eat fish, haring, salmon and sardines are good choices as they are both high in DMAE, a naturally occurring nutrient found fish. This nutrient is important as it helps protect the integrity of our cell membranes. DMAE's primary importance is that it plays a prime role in the manufacture of acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is a precursor to memory, concentration, and in countering mood swings.

Compounds

Let's now talk about key brain nutrients that can not only stave off brain degeneration but actually significantly improve your brain's function.

Gotu Kola

In one study, when Gotu Kola was given to children with capsicum (cayenne pepper) and ginseng, it increased I.Q. of mentally retarded children. Mowrey, Herbal Tonic Therapies, (New Canaan, Connecticut: Keats Publishing, Inc., 1993) 53. Gotu Kola is ranked, and deservedly so, as one of the greatest herbs. Like most medicinal herbs, its taste is earthy yet mildly bitter and sweet combination. (We also make it as an herbal tea in addition to supplementing our diet with it in tablet form.) Without question, however you take it, Gotu Kola deserves to be ranked with powerful memory supplements such as Gingko and DMAE. Some of the benefits of Gotu Kola are better concentration, memory, improved blood flow through blood vessels, and general better cognitive function.

Gingko Biloba

Gingko Biloba, or Ginkgo Biloba as some spell it, is one of the most powerful brain nutrients on the planet. Gingko Biloba has long been recognized as one of the very best memory supplements known to humankind. Gingko also has an illustrious history as it is considered to come from the oldest tree species on earth -- a species of tree that dates back literally over 200 million years! Researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles Neuropsychiatric Institute used positron-emission tomography to study brain regions associated with memory and found that gingko biloba correlated with better brain functioning in these areas.

The herb works by increasing blood flow throughout the body and is thought to support memory recall by repairing circulatory malfunctions in the brain. Ginkgo biloba is the oldest species of tree native to China. Extracts from the leaves of the ginkgo biloba tree has been used medicinally for centuries. Studies showed that ginkgo works by increasing blood flow throughout the body and brain. Especially, ginkgo biloba improves circulation and oxygen supply to the brain. Thereby improves mental alertness by increasing the brain's alpha wave rhythms and overall brain functioning.

Word to The Wise (No Pun Intended)...pregnant and nursing women especially should not take any supplements without a wise opinion. DMAE, Ginkgo Biloba, and Gotu Kola are powerful, but what about side effects? At this time, there are no real known side effects with DMAE. Gingko Biloba, however as it's a blood thinner, when used with prescription medication, there could be some unwanted interaction.

Taken by itself, it is safe if the dosage is small. Gotu Kola actually can cause sensitivity to sunlight.

Be advised if you have the type of skin that can burn easily, you should be mindful of this. Overall, though, it is a very safe herb. Take in recommended dosages with all herbals.

The Grid house by FGMF||||||

The Grid House is a residence by Forte, Gimenes & Marcondes Ferraz Architects and it is located in Serra da Mantiqueira, Brazil. The house is built in a total plot area of 53.24 hectares, while the house and its facilities take over an area of 65,000 square meters. Composed of a structural grid this project was built with a main concept: “the demand for a single-story house, the wish to establish a direct relationship with the land and nature and also the need to provide privacy to the members of the family, with the main area located in one single building.”

photo (c) Ale Shneider

The structural grid was developed according to the topography of the plot of land; an area forming a small valley was chosen to construct the grid. The specific location allows for the house to be protected from the winds, and also allows for privacy as it is close to the forest. Due to the high levels of humidity within the valley, the house was built above the ground and placed on structural beams. Concrete pillars are raised above ground level and act as the foundation of this house, while large trussed structural cor-ten steel beams trussed with the concrete pillars. The concrete pillars and the 11 meter long cor-ten structural beams set the setting for the wooden structural grid which is composed of 5.5×5.5×3m modules. The structural grid creates valid spaces and voids, thus allowing for the user to walk above, within, or below the house. The void modules of the structural grid allow for the lush environment to continue within the areas of the residence as trees grow within the null space.

The program of the project creates the living areas from the structural grid. The main building or the “nucleus” consists of a washing area, social area, guest room and the owner’s apartment, and three isolated modules, with two bedrooms each for the children. Among these areas lay the void modules which highlight the structural continuity; when viewed in floor plan they create the structural grid. The concept of valid and void within the structural grid allows for the enhancement of privacy, while at the same time it allows for uninterrupted views between the garden and the interiors and vice versa. Furthermore, the voids assist in facilitating a clear understanding of the development as an interconnected unit.

ground plan (c) Forte, Gimenes & Marcondes Ferraz Arquitetos

The single storey house blends in with the environment as it floats above the valley and merges into the hills becoming one with the land and thus creating a “new landscape.” Within the same plot of land but farther away lies the leisure pavilion with the repeating structural grid as it portrays the “antagonistic situation of land occupation – whether in the valley or on the hill, the module establishes a clear dialog with the topography.” Another three service pavilions compliment the structure with a program for garage space, the housekeeper’s residence, accommodation for the maids, dressing rooms, warehouses, and other uses follow the same structural grid dimension, albeit in stone structure. Large stone parallel panels anchored to the ground support the slabs, while the wooden constructions are light and delicate; the differentiation in material was purposely done so that these blocks will portray the dissimilar function.

Finally, the architects wanted to “rebuild the margins of the forest and create a transition between the open field and the closed forest by using native species, compatible with the region.” The remaining undeveloped area is utilized as a park with various paths and resting areas for the users to enjoy the views of the forest. In adjacent areas to the development gardens have developed; at the last level of the development, which is a continuation of the plot the architects have developed a “linear water mirror that avoids the use of body protector and relates to the large water mirror located in the lower garden, around which the largest stone at the site.”

Whiter Clouds Could Mean Wetter Land||||||||||||||

http://imgs.sfgate.com/blogs/images/sfgate/ybenjamin/2009/09/02/question-cloud.jpg

ScienceDaily (June 29, 2010) — One proposed emergency fix to halt global warming is to seed clouds over the ocean to make them more reflective, reducing the solar radiation absorbed by the Earth. But the scheme could also change global rainfall patterns, raising concerns of water shortages on land. A new study by the Carnegie Institution, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science, suggests that altered atmospheric circulation under the scheme in fact could increase monsoonal rains and cause the continents to become wetter, not drier, on average.

Whitening clouds over the ocean to reflect sunlight is one of several geoengineering schemes proposed to counter global warming. The whitening would be accomplished by reducing the size of the water droplets making up the clouds. "Rain clouds, which have big droplets, tend to be grey and absorb sunlight, whereas clouds with smaller droplets tend to be white and fluffy and reflect more sunlight to space," says co-author Ken Caldeira of the Carnegie Institution's Department of Global Ecology. "In practice this could be done by shooting a fine spray of seawater high into the air, where the tiny salt particles would create condensation nucleii to form small cloud droplets."

To test the climate consequences of doing this, Caldeira and his coauthors* used a computer simulation of the global climate system in which atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations were set at approximately twice that of present day. Cloud droplets over the oceans in the model were reduced in size to make the clouds more reflective. Clouds over land were unaltered. As expected, the whitened clouds reflected more solar radiation and offset the warming effect of the high carbon dioxide levels.

What surprised the researchers, however, was that the model showed that the oceanic clouds caused the land surface to become cooler and wetter on average. In previous climate simulations diminishing solar radiation by geoengineering had reduced precipitation on land. "The drying of the continents has been a major concern with regard to geoengineering," says Caldeira. But in the model the runoff from the continents increased by 7.5% globally, with the effect being strongest in the tropics.

The researchers concluded that the increased precipitation over land was driven by changes in air circulation, similar to the monsoonal pattern that determines rainfall in parts of Asia. "Monsoons occur when air masses over land are warmer than air masses over the ocean, and this draws in cool, moist air from over the ocean which then drops rain over the land," says Caldeira. In the simulations, the reflective oceanic clouds preferentially cooled the air over the oceans relative to land, setting up a monsoonal air flow.

Caldeira stresses that their study, in which all marine clouds worldwide were uniformly whitened, cannot be used to predict the geographic patterns of rainfall that might develop as a result of geoengineering. "In real life, there are only certain parts of the ocean in which you could make the cloud droplets smaller," he says. Areas downwind of land, such as off the east coast of the United States, are already laden with particles of dust and pollution, so adding more particles will not significantly change cloud cover. "An actual deployment would be much patchier than in our study, and the result would therefore be somewhat different. But our basic result calls into question previous assumptions about the impact of this geoengineering scheme. It merits further investigation."

◄ The Many Voices Of Lauryn Hill::: NPR Interview ►

http://www.kalamu.com/bol/wp-content/content/images/lauryn%2047.jpg

I have mixed messages about interviews, as usual, but all things must be considered to move forward. One thing people have to consider is that artist have lives and children and responsibilities. If my favorite artist stopped making records, I would not be mad. The problem with fans is that they always want new material and get spoiled. If I had one song of my favorite artist to live by, that's enough. One song can change and guide you through life. That's why Lauryn or any artist like her would never have to make another record again for me to be satisfied. "Humble thyself and jah will guide". Disregard the corny voices in the interview and/or opinions and skip to Lauryn.

A Repair Kit For Candida||||||

written by Yeshimabet (contributor)

If you speak to most folks about what they eat on a daily basis, you will find that their diets are hugely comprised of refined sugars, starches, and high preservative foods. True nutritional wellness is based on a diet of balance, so definitely treat yourself but, don't go overboard. The over consumption of certain foods can create a very acidic and yeast like environment in the body which usually results in Candida. Candida is a state of inner imbalance, not a disease. The yeast itself is common, normally laying dormant in the gastrointestinal tract. The imbalance occurs as a result of over usage of antibiotics, birth control pills, refined sugars and carbohydrates, and a lack of rest. The body loses its intestinal balance and candida yeasts multiply too rapidly, feeding on excess carbs in the digestive tract. If overlooked the yeast morphs into fungus. In this form it can infect any part of the body, the most common are the feet, nails, skin, sinuses, genitals, etc. You will usually experience itchy skin in all of these areas, uncommon sore throats, and sometimes abnormal headaches. Through my own experience and conversations with other folks, I put together a little list of do's and don'ts that will assist in making the process of healing a lot easier.

*There is a product on the market called Candi-Gone, it consist of a tincture formula as well as capsules, its about a 2 week supply, you will definitely need enough for 4 weeks. Take this in conjunction with a 50 billion count of acidophilus. These should all be available at The Vitamin Shoppe or your local health food store.

Foods to Eliminate:
-Sweeteners of any kind
-Breads and baked goods
-Nutritional yeast
-Fried Foods
-Dairy
-All night shades (potatoes, mushrooms, eggplant, tomatoes, sweet peppers, etc.)
-All nuts(some sources say that almonds, hemp and sesame seeds are cool in moderation but, see how you feel)
-Fruits and juices (green apples are an exception)
-All fermented foods (dried fruits, olives, all vinegars)
-Coffee, black tea, carbonated drinks
*Avoid antibiotics during this time (produce excess yeast in the system)

Healing Foods to Enjoy:
-Raw and Steamed Vegetables (especially red onions, garlic, ginger, cabbage, and broccoli)
-Vegetable juices (try to have at least one green juice or shot of wheatgrass per day)
-Sea vegetables (dulse, arame, hijiki, kelp, kombu, nori, etc.)
-Fresh water fish if you eat seafood (no shrimp, lobster, crab, scallops, etc.)
-Olive, coconut, avocado oils
-brown rice (has a cleansing affect) quinoa, and millet. (If you have a taste for pasta make sure that it doesn't contain semolina or any flours for that matter.) There are several on the market that are made w/ brown rice, quinoa, corn, lentils, and artichokes. They are available at most health food stores.
-Miso and Tofu
-Herbal teas (especially any white tea infusion and Pau d'arco) Have as much tea and miso soup as you like.
-If you feel yourself needing more protein, lentils and aduki beans are very grounding and easy on the system.
*Really the best way to eat during this time is macrobiotic. It is a meal consisting of steamed greens, brown rice, beans, sea vegetables, steamed broccoli and cauliflower, tofu or fresh water fish, with tahini dressing and gomasio (which is sesame seeds and sea salt) Very balancing in yin and yang energy, pretty much everything that your body will need in a meal.

*I know that this is all easier said than done because there is sugar and starch in just about everything that we eat. I know that 4 weeks sounds like a long time but, its not forever, we have to learn to honor our bodies by giving it the time that it needs to heal. Its all about making space and changing awareness so the next time won't be as bad. So please delight in the experience and as always be patient with the process....Bless and Be well

Ginger 4 Spleen||||||||||||||||||||||

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/62/376095467_4801d0f7bb_o.jpg

Ginger...

- Speeds up your metabolism.

- It's a warming food so grate it into juices or on salads in the winter.

- Its soothing antiseptic properties help the body handle the cold and wind.

- It's a natural remedy for morning and travel sickness. Something to do with the Gingerols

- It's great for the spleen.

Now I don't know about you, but up until about a year ago, I had absolutely no idea where the spleen was, what it did and why I should even care!

I mean, 'spleen'... it's not the most attractive of words is it? Sounds a bit nasty. But the thing is, it's really rather crucial if you want to benefit from a healthy diet. You see, for all it's a small organ, the spleen has many functions:

- #1 - It acts as a blood reservoir in times of emergency, for example, if we cut ourselves badly.

- #2 - It recycles worn out red blood cells by transforming them into iron in your blood.

- #3 - It's part of the immune system, it neutralizes unhealthy bacteria preventing colds and flus.

- #4 - It works with your stomach for the uptake of nutrients from the food we eat, so a worn out spleen means that even if you are eating healthy foods, you are not going to absorb them properly.

A tired spleen is very common indeed.

If you are prone to colds and flu the chances are your spleen is weak. Other signs that yours needs a bit of TLC would be wind, bloating and (I trust you've eaten) constantly loose and runny bowel movements ie. where no stool has formed.

Ginger is just one example of foods that nourish the spleen. Others are onions, leeks, garlic, cinnamon, fennel and anything high in chlorophyll eg. Kale and leafy greens. And try eating oats, rice or spelt for breakfast.

The main active ingredient in Ginger is thought to be a compound called gingerol, which helps to relax blood vessels and stimulate blood flow. Given that the spleen is so busy with our blood, it's no surprise that it benefits so much from ginger, which also appears to be effective in helping to lower blood pressure and reduce blood clotting (as an alternative to Aspirin).

I always have ginger in the fridge and use it in juices, salads, stir-fries, soups, marinades and dressings. My top tip - if it's just the juice you need, use a garlic press. Far less fiddly than grating it!
