What Your Tongue is Telling You About Your Health>>

Tongue Problems to Watch Out For
A change in the appearance or feeling of your tongue could be related to the tongue itself or another problem within your body. Meanwhile, some tongue changes are harmless while others may indicate health issues are present. Here are some common tongue scenarios, along with what they may be telling you.
  • Hairy Tongue: If the papillae (small bumps) that cover the surface of your tongue become enlarged and profuse, it can make the tongue appear hairy or furry. This is harmless (but if the appearance is bothersome antibiotics are sometimes given).
  • Geographic Tongue: This condition is characterized by smooth, bright red patches on the top of the tongue. The patches can change size and location from day to day (and have a map-like, or geographic, appearance). There may also be some soreness or burning. This condition is also harmless and usually resolves on its own in a few months (it's sometimes triggered by stress, hormonal changes or allergies).
  • Fissured Tongue: This is another harmless condition in which deep grooves form on the tongue's surface. In fact, fissured tongue is an inherited trait that normally occurs in 10 percent of population.
  • Black Tongue: A black, coated tongue can result from an overgrowth of bacteria and yeast in the mouth, which then accumulate on the papillae and cause discoloration. This is a harmless condition that can usually be resolved by brushing your tongue with a toothbrush twice a day. Rinsing your mouth with diluted hydrogen peroxide can also help remove the discoloration.
  • Smooth, Pale Tongue: A smooth tongue can be a sign of nutritional deficiencies, particularly vitamin B-12 deficiency. It can also be an indicator of anemia.
    • Canker Sores on the Tongue: A viral ulcer or "canker sore" may appear on the tongue. These can be painful but will go away on their own. Canker sores can appear for apparently no reason, though some doctors believe they are triggered by stress and fatigue.
    • Enlarged/Swollen Tongue: A swollen tongue can be caused by a number of disorders, including strep infection, Down's syndrome, leukemia, cancer, and hypothyroidism. It can also be a minor side effect due to a hangover or an allergic reaction to food or medication.
    • Red Tongue: If your tongue is red (from dark pink to magenta) it could be a sign of nutritional deficiencies, particularly that you may not be getting enough folic acid, vitamin B-12 or vitamin B3.
    • White Tongue: A white coating on your tongue could mean that you are dehydrated. It can also be caused by smoking or drinking alcohol. A white coating can also be a sign of thrush, which is an infection of the mouth with the yeast Candida albicans.
How to Keep Your Tongue Healthy
To keep your tongue clean and healthy, along with brushing your teeth regularly experts recommend using a tongue scraper twice a day. Tongue scrapers are inexpensive, and it takes only about 10 or 15 seconds to do: just slide the scraper gently over your tongue (you don't need to press hard!), repeat three or four times to reach the entire surface, and you're done.

People Learn While They Sleep, Study Suggests◥◥

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2011) — People may be learning while they're sleeping -- an unconscious form of memory that is still not well understood, according to a study by Michigan State University researchers.

The findings are highlighted in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General.
"We speculate that we may be investigating a separate form of memory, distinct from traditional memory systems," said Kimberly Fenn, assistant professor of psychology and lead researcher on the project. "There is substantial evidence that during sleep, your brain is processing information without your awareness and this ability may contribute to memory in a waking state."
In the study of more than 250 people, Fenn and Zach Hambrick, associate professor of psychology, suggest people derive vastly different effects from this "sleep memory" ability, with some memories improving dramatically and others not at all. This ability is a new, previously undefined form of memory.
"You and I could go to bed at the same time and get the same amount of sleep," Fenn said, "but while your memory may increase substantially, there may be no change in mine." She added that most people showed improvement.
Fenn said she believes this potential separate memory ability is not being captured by traditional intelligence tests and aptitude tests such as the SAT and ACT.
"This is the first step to investigate whether or not this potential new memory construct is related to outcomes such as classroom learning," she said.
It also reinforces the need for a good night's sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, people are sleeping less every year, with 63 percent of Americans saying their sleep needs are not being met during the week.
"Simply improving your sleep could potentially improve your performance in the classroom," Fenn said.

Particles Appear to Travel Faster Than Light: OPERA Experiment Reports Anomaly in Flight Time of Neutrinos

ScienceDaily (Sep. 23, 2011) — Scientists with the OPERA experiment, which observes a neutrino beam from CERN 730 km away at Italy's INFN Gran Sasso Laboratory, are presenting surprising new results (in a seminar at CERN on Sept. 23, 2011) that appear to show neutrinos traveling faster than light.

The OPERA result is based on the observation of over 15000 neutrino events measured at Gran Sasso, and appears to indicate that the neutrinos travel at a velocity 20 parts per million above the speed of light, nature's cosmic speed limit. Given the potential far-reaching consequences of such a result, independent measurements are needed before the effect can either be refuted or firmly established. This is why the OPERA collaboration has decided to open the result to broader scrutiny. The collaboration's result is available on the preprint server arXiv (http://arxiv.org/list/hep-ex/new).
"This result comes as a complete surprise," said OPERA spokesperson, Antonio Ereditato of the University of Bern. "After many months of studies and cross checks we have not found any instrumental effect that could explain the result of the measurement. While OPERA researchers will continue their studies, we are also looking forward to independent measurements to fully assess the nature of this observation."
"When an experiment finds an apparently unbelievable result and can find no artefact of the measurement to account for it, it's normal procedure to invite broader scrutiny, and this is exactly what the OPERA collaboration is doing, it's good scientific practice," said CERN Research Director Sergio Bertolucci. "If this measurement is confirmed, it might change our view of physics, but we need to be sure that there are no other, more mundane, explanations. That will require independent measurements."
In order to perform this study, the OPERA Collaboration teamed up with experts in metrology from CERN and other institutions to perform a series of high precision measurements of the distance between the source and the detector, and of the neutrinos' time of flight. The distance between the origin of the neutrino beam and OPERA was measured with an uncertainty of 20 cm over the 730 km travel path. The neutrinos' time of flight was determined with an accuracy of less than 10 nanoseconds by using sophisticated instruments including advanced GPS systems and atomic clocks. The time response of all elements of the CNGS beam line and of the OPERA detector has also been measured with great precision.
"We have established synchronization between CERN and Gran Sasso that gives us nanosecond accuracy, and we've measured the distance between the two sites to 20 centimetres," said Dario Autiero, the CNRS researcher who will give this afternoon's seminar. "Although our measurements have low systematic uncertainty and high statistical accuracy, and we place great confidence in our results, we're looking forward to comparing them with those from other experiments."
"The potential impact on science is too large to draw immediate conclusions or attempt physics interpretations. My first reaction is that the neutrino is still surprising us with its mysteries." said Ereditato. "Today's seminar is intended to invite scrutiny from the broader particle physics community."
The OPERA experiment was inaugurated in 2006, with the main goal of studying the rare transformation (oscillation) of muon neutrinos into tau neutrinos. One first such event was observed in 2010, proving the unique ability of the experiment in the detection of the elusive signal of tau neutrinos.
The seminar will be webcast at http://webcast.cern.ch.

Smell Goods We Suggest███

I'm sure that you have your favorite incense and I'm not trying to cramp anyone's style but, there is always room to add another to your arsenal. There is one on the market that smells like the best cup of heaven. Its called Fred Soll's Resin on a Stick and it's some of the best incense that I have ever burned. It is a family owned and operated business out of California and you can just feel all the good energy that these folks put into their products. They have some of the best Frankincense and Myrrh that I have ever experienced and it burns for a whole hour. Some of our favorites are Honey Amber, Lemongrass, Sacred Myrrh, White Sage and Dragon's Blood, Strawberry Fields (which smells like everybody's house from the 70's and 80's), and a host of other scents to choose from. Please check them out at www.fredsoll.com or feel free to click on our healers and friends link to gain easy access. I'm serious, its the TRUTH!!! Be Well

For over 20 years, Fred Soll has been making incense from all-natural ingredients. Fred’s incense making process is an intricate one that can take up to three weeks for each batch. The manual labor is intensive, but worth it. Made with all-natural resin, Fred Soll® incense is handmade, hand dipped, and dried in the New Mexico Sun.
Fred refuses to compromise his standards, buying only the highest quality pure resins, essential oils, and herbs, and never any chemicals.
All you have to do is take a look at the sticks, you’ll see the powders and the chunks of resin glittering on the surface. Pick up the package, and you’ll feel the weight of it.

Sounds good, now which Incense is the best to start with?

Well, you can browse all of the scents we carry in the Fred Soll’s Incense Category on our website. Or you could just go with one of the favorites from the folks on the Eye of Horus Online Community: Sandalwood, Honey Amber, Cinnamon, or Lavender. Of course, they are available in our Minneapolis store, as well.

Instructions for Burning Fred Soll’s Resin on a Stick®

Light the tip of the incense with a match. Blow out quikcly in 2-3 seconds. Continue with this procedure until a “glow” appears. This will help the resin not to bubble, drip or put itself out.
Place horizontally in an ash catcher.
Designed to be burned in a horizontal, rather than vertical, position, each stick of Fred Soll’s® incense burns a whopping two hours. Occassionally, Fred’s incense may stop burning. There are no added chemicals to help it burn, just relight the stick and enjoy!

5 ALIVE ?

1.) We’re Running Out of Oil
There is but one resource which is perhaps the most important element of modern civilization- oil. All thanks to oil, everything from plastic to robotics have been produced. Without oil, civilization in it’s entirety would collapse- we’d be set back hundreds of years. The only problem- we’re actually running out of oil!
There are many reasons as to why the establishment takes us to war- but one major reason is the procuring of oil. Iraq was all about oil. The U.S. is still entrenched in the middle east so that it’s access to oil and hence it’s economic future is secure… or so it thinks.
2.) The Global Economy is Done For
Greed and ineptitude are the primary reasons for recent set backs in the global economy. With stocks in decline world-wide and with gold prices surging, there is no doubt that a global great depression is soon heading our way.
In the great depression of last century, millions starved to death- and this was during a time when eighty percent of America was farmland. Today, the tables have turned- eighty percent of America is now urban. Internationally, imagine how many more billions will die when the new depression hits us!
3.) Intelligence is in Decline
The world’s population is set to reach nine billion by 2050. My theory is that intelligence is a force which operates on a wave. The greater the population, the more stretched out and hence the more weakened the “intelligence-wave” becomes.
In the United States, it’s no secret how really stupid everyone has become. We are behind the rest of the world in terms of education- pumping out one college grad after the next- each of them party-going, beer drinking buffoons who more than likely cheated their entire way through college- or  just played the “memorization game” and didn’t really learn anything at all.
A world run by the aforementioned idiot-assholes is certainly one that I wouldn’t want my children to be a part of!
4.) Mother Nature Has Become Increasingly Violent
Yellowstone Super Volcano to End All Life?
There is an epidemic of mega-disasters occurring world-wide in greater than normal frequency. In 2004, a giant earthquake triggered a massive tsunami which crashed into the shores of India, killing hundreds of thousands of people. In 2010, Chile and Haiti were as well devastated by unusually strong earthquakes.
The above represents just a few examples of extreme mega-disasters occurring in higher frequency these days. Let us not forget Hurricane Katrina, the 2011 tornado wave which tore apart the mid-west, and the potential eruption of a super-volcano beneath Yellowstone National Park which would be a true “earth-killing” event.
5.) Nuclear War is Inevitable
A nuclear war would end all life as we know it. Albert Einstein is quoted as having said, “I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.”
Our leaders suffer from a gross form of senility, triggered by their extreme lust for power, which may in fact lead to them pushing a button that would launch us straight into World War III.
It’s interesting to note that it took a second world war to get us out of the great depression of last century. Considering the lack of concern for human life on part of our leaders, I wouldn’t be surprised if the advice given by men like Paul Krugman- who actually suggests starting a new world war in order to avert a depression- is taken seriously.

Why Curry Was Made☾ ☽ ☼ ☀

Basically curry’s medical benefits are derived from their spice rich ingredients; here is the break down of usual spices found in curry (and their benefits):
Turmeric, curry’s main ingredient is recognized by its yellow color. A member of the ginger family, turmeric has long been associated with its healing properties. Used as a common antiseptic in India, turmeric is used regularly to treat damaged skin such as cuts or burns. It's even being touted as a possible cure for Alzheimer's disease.
Cinnamon – Cinnamon is a natural antioxidant which is beneficial to the beautification purposes, not to mention cinnamon oil has antimicrobial properties which prolongs the life of the curry.
Black Pepper – Black pepper has a very long history of medical benefits, the list goes like this: Alleviated hemorrhoids, Alleviates gas, helps constipation, improves digestion, improves appetite lost, promotes sweating (cardio workout), Promotes urination, anti-bacterial effects, natural anti-oxidant, and everyone’s favorite; helps in breaking down fat cells.
Allspice – Allspice is also known as Jamaican pepper, Myrtle pepper. It’s beneficial attribute comes from folklore whereby it provide relief for digestive problems.
Anise – Anise leaves in curry are used to treat digestive problems, toothaches and the oil extract can be used to treat lice and scabies.
Asafoetida – the main medical usage for Asafoetida is for the aid of digestive system, mild cases of asthma, bronchitis and is traditionally used in the aid of children’s cold.
Cardamom – Cardamom is used traditionally in Chinese medicine to treat stomach-aches, constipation, dysentery, and other digestion problems.
Chili Pepper - Red chili peppers are very rich in vitamin C and pro-vitamin A. Additionally, peppers are a good source of most vitamins B, especially B6. Potassium in chili that are high magnesium and iron would really make up for those lazy days.
Clovers – Clovers are reported by many people to be extremely effective in their struggle with nicotine cravings. Well, imagine having craving for curry instead (who’d complaint).
Coriander leaves – Coriander leaves has been used as a folk medicine for the relief of anxiety and insomnia in Iranian folk medicine.
Cumin – Cumin can be really helpful in asthma, common and a booster in immune system during cold and flu season. Capsulated Cumin can be beneficial to hair and nails, and if mixed with moisturized cream you can reap the benefits of a healthier skin.

○ ◎ ● ◯ ΔNew Material Shows Promise for Trapping Pollutants

ScienceDaily (Sep. 8, 2011)Water softening techniques are very effective for removing minerals such as calcium and magnesium, which occur as positively-charged ions in "hard" water. But many heavy metals and other inorganic pollutants form negatively-charged ions in water, and existing water treatment processes to remove them are inefficient and expensive.

Chemists at the University of California, Santa Cruz, have now developed a new type of material that can soak up negatively-charged pollutants from water. The new material, which they call SLUG-26, could be used to treat polluted water through an ion exchange process similar to water softening. In a water softener, sodium ions weakly attached to a negatively-charged resin are exchanged for the hard-water minerals, which are held more tightly by the resin. SLUG-26 provides a positively-charged substrate that can exchange a nontoxic negative ion for the negatively-charged pollutants.
"Our goal for the past 12 years has been to make materials that can trap pollutants, and we finally got what we wanted. The data show that the exchange process works," said Scott Oliver, associate professor of chemistry at UC Santa Cruz.
The chemical name for SLUG-26 is copper hydroxide ethanedisulfonate. It has a layered structure of positively-charged two-dimensional sheets with a high capacity for holding onto negative ions. Oliver and UCSC graduate student Honghan Fei described the compound in a paper that will be published in the journal Angewandte Chemie and is currently available online.
The researchers are currently focusing on the use of SLUG-26 to trap the radioactive metal technetium, which is a major concern for long-term disposal of radioactive waste. Technetium is produced in nuclear reactors and has a long half-life of 212,000 years. It forms the negative ion pertechnetate in water and can leach out of solid waste, making groundwater contamination a serious concern.
"It's a problem because of its environmental mobility, so they need new ways to trap it," Oliver said.
In their initial studies, the researchers used manganese, which forms the negative ion permanganate, as a non-radioactive analog for technetium and pertechnetate. The next step will be to work with technetium and see if SLUG-26 performs as effectively as it did in the initial studies.
"Whether or not it can be used in the real world is still to be seen, but so far it looks very promising," Oliver said.
This research was supported by the National Science Foundation.

In 2004 the DJAZZ label released a 12" of Zero 7's Umi Says Remix with Jamie Cullum's cover of Pharrell's Frontin on the B Side. Needless to say Jamie Cullum's Live Lounge version completely overshadowed this deep, spacey remix which still sounds good a full 7 years later. Completely different fell but still delicious.
