Youssou N'Dour: I Bring What I Love

Youssou N'Dour: I Bring What I Love

Directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi

Youssou N'Dour: I Bring What I Love is a remarkable film portrait of the legendary artist and humanitarian and the making of his Grammy Award-winning album Egypt. An extraordinary testament to his Muslim faith and an impassioned plea for a more tolerant view of Islam, the film profiles N'Dour with candid insight while providing a timely look at the complex place of music in Islam. WOMEN ARE HEROES”

The Woman Project wants to underline their pivotal role and to hightline their dignity by shooting them in their daily lives and posting them on the walls of their country.

On the other hand, by posting the same images if these women in Western countries, the project allows everyone to feel concerned by their condition and connects, through art, the two different worlds.

Kenya, South-Sudan, Sierra.-Leone, Liberia - The violence suffered by woman there is the extreme expression of discrimination. The ethnic wars in Africa are a source of the worst crimes on woman. When meeting them, JR wants to testify of their force, their courage and their noble struggle: first to live, then to exist.

Do you wash your hands correctly?

Chances are, you have been washing your own hands for quite a while. Bacteria, viruses, fungi and other microbiotic life are everywhere. All it takes is a little soap and some water, right? Actually, there is a bit more to handwashing. Below, find out how to wash your hands correctly, and why it matters so much.

Here's Why:

The single most important thing you can do to keep from getting sick and to stop the spread of disease-causing germs is to wash your hands often . By frequently washing your hands, you wash away germs that you may have picked up from other people or from contaminated surfaces. One of the most common ways people catch colds is by rubbing their nose or their eyes after their hands have been contaminated with the cold virus. More frequent hand washing may be able to reduce the spread of the cold virus. Some studies show that when children are carefully taught to wash their hands school absenteeism is reduced, perhaps especially when alcohol-based hand rubs are combined with handwashing.

You cannot see germs with the naked eye, so wash your hands often. Especially important times include:

* After using a Computer(computer hold germs more than any tool in the home)
* Before, during, and after you prepare food
* Before you eat
* After you use the bathroom
* After you change a diaper
* After handling animals or animal waste
* When your hands are dirty
* More frequently when someone in your home is sick

Here's How:

To properly wash your hands, follow these simple steps:

* First wet your hands with warm water and apply liquid or lather with a clean bar of soap.
* Next rub your hands together vigorously and scrub all surfaces. Also clean under your fingernails to help control germs and keep them trimmed and short.
* Continue for at least 15 seconds or about the length of a little tune (for example: the "Happy Birthday" song). It is the soap combined with the scrubbing action that helps dislodge and remove germs.
* Rinse your hands well and then dry them.

Note: When soap is not readily available, alcohol-based hand rubs offer a quick and easy alternative. No water is needed and studies show they’re fairly effective. But washing with soap is still the best single step you can take to prevent infection.

Germs on Computers:
Did you know that the average computer keyboard is proven to accumulate more germs than a public toilet?Considering how often fingers come into contact with computer keyboards, it's not surprising that a new study published in Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology found some pretty gross results.

*All keyboards tested positive for a staph bacterium called coagulase-negative staphylococci. This is one of the most common causes of bloodstream infections among those hospitalized.

*80 percent of keyboards contained diphtheroids. This bacteria represents a significant infection risk for those whose immune systems are weak, such as cancer and AIDS patients.

In my opinion the best thing to wash your hands with is what doctors use before the operate on patients. Makes the most sense right? Its a solution called Betadine and you can pick it up from any pharmacy or grocery store. When I am at home I spread in across my hands before I use liquid soap and warm water. This is what it looks like::

Be well folks...Your only as clean as the last thing you touch!

Claude Nougaro > Bidonville

With his Bidonville album, released in 1966, Nougaro decides to release French music out of its boundaries, far from commonly tread ground, above and beyond habitually visited places. For the word crazy Toulousain singer, his inspiration comes from a mix of other landscapes.

Brazil offers him bossa nova, sensuality and the standard Berimbau that he completely makes his own to create Bidonville, magnificently orchestrated by Baden Powell.
Next up he turns to Africa for the first time and its complex rhythms which he uses brilliantly on the tribal and bewitching L'Amour Sorcier. The Afro-Brazilian influence creates interesting avenues, but jazz remains Nougaro's main passion, the musical current he blends with best and through which his poetry is fully satisfied.
With covers (A Bout De Souffle borrowed from Dave Brudbeck) and compositions (Sing Sing Song) Nougaro's voice is a perfect match for the swing and syncopations of this demanding music.

Bidonville is a great jazz classic, with brilliantly composed songs of omnipresent inventiveness, and insolent youth.

Open Canvas June 25th>>..>>..

Pondering the intricacies of painting and the people who create, "Open
Canvas" is DC's first consistent live freestyle art show. Every month,
local painters freestyle paint images to canvas live in front of
hundreds of people. Nothing is planned, every piece is improvised. For
the exhibit, rather than framing the images, the artists mount them on
isles, encouraging viewers to get close to experience the work. There
is also an opportunity for the crowd to play an active role in creating
a piece live as well. While artists paint, Djs blends and
eclectic mix of rare grooves. Rather than a conventional set with
ipods, cd's or a play list, DJs fuses everything from Bjork to
Backyard Band in a sultry mix . Big up yourself if you have ever been...You matter.

Battle of the Grains - Brown Rice VS Quinoa

Whole grains, like oatmeal and brown rice, are the general choice for most people because it's readily available and cheap. But what about “new” grains, such as quinoa? If it stood toe to toe with the brown rice, which would be crowned the champ?

Let's assume that you are a progressive eater. Meaning you don't eat white bread or white rice or white meat. You are pretty conscious about what you put into your body from day to day, even if you eat meat. With this in mind, most of you probably eat brown rice over white rice any day due to the fact that you know its better for you. Brown rice is an unpolished rice, the brownish layer that is left clinging to the seed(rice) is called bran. Fully unpolished - is when the entire bran layer is not removed, the color of the rice is very brown. Brown rice as an excellent source of manganese, and a good source of the minerals selenium and magnesium.

Quinoa dominates just about all the whole grains because it has lysine, one of the nine essential amino acids that you must get from your diet because your body can’t synthesize it. Other grains have some lysine content, but not enough to count; quinoa’s lysine content is sufficient for it to be considered a complete protein. If that were all quinoa had going for it, it would still beat brown rice hands down. But there’s more. In a study conducted in 2002, researchers found that eating quinoa was associated with an increase in insulin-like growth factor-1 levels. Quinoa was once called "the gold of the Incas," who recognized its value in increasing the stamina of their warriors. Not only is quinoa high in protein, but the protein it supplies is complete protein, meaning that it includes all nine essential amino acids. Not only is quinoa's amino acid profile well balanced, making it a good choice for vegans concerned about adequate protein intake, but quinoa is especially well-endowed with the amino acid lysine, which is essential for tissue growth and repair. In addition to protein, quinoa features a host of other health-building nutrients. Because quinoa is a very good source of manganese as well as a good source of magnesium, iron, copper and phosphorus, this "grain" may be especially valuable for persons with migraine headaches, diabetes and atherosclerosis.

Quinoa is generally available in prepackaged containers as well as bulk bins. Just as with any other food that you may purchase in the bulk section, make sure that the bins containing the quinoa are covered and that the store has a good product turnover so as to ensure its maximal freshness. Whether purchasing quinoa in bulk or in a packaged container, make sure that there is no evidence of moisture. When deciding upon the amount to purchase, remember that quinoa expands during the cooking process to several times its original size. If you cannot find it in your local supermarket, look for it at natural foods stores, which usually carry this super grain. Be well>>>>

Nino Nardini>>The Original Mad Scientist?

HARD-HITTING LIBRARY FUNK!

Crazed librarian Nino Nardini was the 'mad-scientist' of modern music. The French genius had one of the most gifted and imaginative minds in the weird world of Incredibly Strange Music. As a composer, innovator, and all-round musical psycho, he has never failed to astound or impress with the sheer brilliance and variety of his musical concoctions. WELLNESS>>>>

Additives::What is Xanthum and Guar Gum?

I went to a popular "organic market" yesterday. I was about to buy something when I noticed it had an abundance of additives and preservatives. I looked through several items similar to the one I wanted to purchase and noticed these two additives, Xanthum Gum and Guar Gum were in everything. I know for a fact that I have never seen Xanthum Gum or Guar Gum in the vegeatable section so it has to be some man made drama going on.

So here's the scoop:::
Guar and xanthan gum aren't the safest ingredients. Guar gum can best be described as a natural food thickener, similar to locust bean gum, cornstarch or tapioca flour. Guar gum is said to have significantly more thickening ability than cornstarch, at a fraction of the cost. This has made guar gum a popular additive in products such as puddings and ice creams. Until recently, guar gum was also an ingredient in non-prescription diet pills designed to create a sense of fullness.

"FDA also recalled Cal-Ban 3000, a heavily advertised diet pill containing guar gum (a vegetable gum that swells when it absorbs moisture, providing a feeling of fullness, according to advertising claims) after receiving a number of consumer complaints of adverse reactions. In a number of cases, the tablet caused gastric or
esophageal obstruction, and one person died as a result of complications following surgery to remove the mass of gum blocking his throat."

The FDA states that some bulking agents (eg. guar gum) used in dietary supplements to swell the stomach and increase "fullness", can be harmful. In certain cases they can cause obstructions in the intestines, stomach, or esophagus. The FDA has taken legal action against several promoters of diet supplements containing guar gum.

Xanthan gum is considered a polysaccharide in scientific circles, because it is a long chain of three different forms of sugar. What's important to know is that all three of these natural sugars are present in corn sugar, a derivative of the more familiar corn syrup. The Xanthomonas campestris bacteria literally eat a supply of this corn sugar under controlled conditions, and the digestion process converts the individual sugars into a single substance with properties similar to cornstarch. Xanthan gum is used in dairy products and salad dressings as a thickening agent and stabilizer. Xanthan gum prevents ice crystals from forming in ice creams, and also provides a 'fat feel' in low or no-fat dairy products.

Are Additives Harmful?
Food additives preserve flavour or improve its taste and appearance. This basically means that companies know certain foods will be shelved longer than most or they expect them to have a long "shelf life". As a result, the foods won't be as nutritious to you and may taste better than they feel. Partially hydrogenated oils are acknowledged contributors in the obesity controversy among children and adults in the United States. Trans fatty acids are now added to many snack foods that we consume each day and some research indicates they are more harmful than saturated fats because they increase the plasma concentrations of LDL (low-density lipoprotein, also known as the “bad” cholesterol) while reducing the concentration of HDL (high-density lipoprotein, which removes cholesterol from the lining of your arteries.)

Muse:::Sebastien Tellier>>>Tony Allen...Lead In

Tony Allen can not be touched...I just found out he played drums on this track with Sebastien Tellier who is dope in his own right. Check the vid/drums and the read. Peace.

Lyrics to La Ritournelle :

Oh nothing's going to change my love for you
I wanna spend my life with you
So we make love on the grass under the moon
No one call tell, damned if I do
Forever journey on golden avenues
I drift in your eyes since I love you
I got that beat in my veins for only rule
Love is to share, mine is for you
(Merci à gnazio pour cettes paroles)
Tony Allen
Fela Kuti said that "without Tony Allen, there would be no Afrobeat". It will not be an exaggeration to say that he invented a whole new style of drumming. There are at least three main variations in Afrobeat as far as I can see. Having a double snare hit on beats one and three(Don't Fight and Jakewaleh), having a double kick on beats one and three(Kindness) and having the dotted sixteens on beat one(Masters At Work). I recently noticed one more and will try to put an example here soon.If you go to his web page and then click on the discography link below, there are two live videos. I just noticed in those videos that he almost never plays double sixteen notes on the hi hat, always three sixteen notes. It is hard to tell such a difference from listening to the songs in the albums. For example, it is standard in afro beat to open the hi hat in the second sixteenth note. I wasn't sure if he was doing this with double hits or triple hits. Playing triple sixteenths seems a little harder at first but when you get used to it, the feel of the beats also sounds more close to his playing. If there are only two sixteen notes on the hi hat, you should add the third one and play three of them. Alright, let me not act like I know music...Check his music when time allows...Bless...Define water?

Monument Eternal>>Book of the week

I love books from the 70's. The writing was more internal because there was more LOVE. Alice Coltrane was a significant writer and musician. Many of her books can only be found in Cali so you should try and link them through her Sai Anantam Ashram in the Santa Monica Mountains.

As Alice Coltrane observed in her book, Monument Eternal: “Many of the Celestial instruments can be played without the use of hands or without any physical contact whatsoever. Your mind, your heart is your only approach to them. Your thoughts open up the many avenues of sound and expression on these wonderful instruments.”

"At dawn, sit at the Feet of Action.
At noon, be at the Hand of Might.
At eventide, be so big that sky will learn Sky."

Long lived wellness to A. Coltrane- Turiyasangitanda
