Beets Beets...Rock the Beet!>>>

Beets belong to the same family as chard and spinach – greens that are renowned for their healthful benefits. But, with this delicious and nutritious purple root gaining in popularity and accessibility, it’s time our traditional green salads are tossed to a different “beet.”

Beetroots (the purple bulbous part of the plant) are an excellent source of folic acid, fiber, manganese, vitamin B6, and potassium. But don’t get lost in the “purple haze” and forget to eat the beet greens, which are rich in calcium, iron, and vitamins A and C.

Beets have long been used to treat liver disorders, given their stimulating effects on the liver’s detoxification process. They contain high levels of betacyanin – compounds with antioxidant capabilities – that are powerful cancer fighting agents. Additionally, beets are high in fiber, which helps to moderate bowel function and cholesterol levels.

According to Dr. Michael Murray’s book, “Healing Foods”, beets have been reported to play a protective role against colon cancer. In animal studies, beet fiber has been shown to increase the level of antioxidant enzymes, specifically glutathione peroxidase and glutathione-S-transferase, as well as increase the number of special white blood cells responsible for detecting and eliminating abnormal cells.

In a study of patients with stomach cancer, beet juice was found to be a potent inhibitor of the formation of nitrosamines (cancer-causing compounds derived primarily from the ingestion of nitrates from smoked or cured meats) as well as the cell mutations caused by these compounds.

I prefer beets in juice form mixed with other veggies. Here is a simple recipe for juicing:

Raw Carrots (alpha carotene, beta carotene, Vitamin E, etc.),
Raw Broccoli (sulforaphanes/isothiocyanates),
Raw cabbage (isothiocyanates),
Green Asparagus (saponins),
Beetroot/red beets (proanthocyanidins (PAC's or OPC's)), and
Turmeric (a spice) (curcurmin).

LENTICULAR CLOUDS

Stationary lens-shaped clouds that form at high altitudes, normally aligned at right-angles to the wind direction.Power pilots tend to avoid flying near lenticular clouds because of the turbulence of the rotor systems that accompany them, but sailplane pilots actively seek them out. This is because the systems of atmospheric standing waves that cause "lennies" (as they are sometimes familiarly called) also involve large vertical air movements, and the precise location of the rising air mass is fairly easy to predict from the orientation of the clouds.

The SuperFood Series: Irish Sea Moss

I grew up seeing Irish sea moss dried in random bags in the cupboard and being grossed out by its appearance. My father and all his West-Indian constituents seemed to swear by it. It was introduced to me as a healing tonic specifically for men, that gave you stamina on every level. Especially with the ladies so, it was valued like choice gold and never really offered to me. I would always laugh for about 5 minutes when I thought about them drinking it. As of late, I have actually been using it in my smoothies considering, that its a seaweed, I know that its a healing food on so many other levels. Traditionally, what gelatin is to Jell-O, sea moss is to puddings, meringues, whipped cream, salad dressing, smoothies, sauces, and pretty much anything that you want a stable-liquid form for. While gelatin is an animal derived protein, Irish sea moss contains a polysaccharide (a natural form of sugar) which when thoroughly blended, also disperses throughout the liquid to create a semi-solid structure. In fact, the carageenan found in sea moss makes it a very valuable component in the mainstream food industry. In addition to its functional benefits, sea moss has an excellent source of minerals. This almost tasteless seaweed is loaded with life enhancing nutrients, such as sulphur, protein, iodine, bromine, beta-carotene, calcium, iron, magnesium, maganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, zinc, pectin, B vitamins, and vitamin C. Phosphates of potassium and calcium, sodium, and magnesium are required by the cells of the brain, liver, skin, and bones. Calcium phosphate salts in particular, form the major insoluble inorganic component of the bone, giving us stronger bones and teeth. Notably absent from a vegetarian diet, sulphur containing acids, such as taurine, are abundant in Irish moss, more so than any other type of seaweed. It has been recognized for its ability to cure and abate the symptoms of colds and flu, it forms an effective barrier to all the ills of winter. It is high in potassium chloride, this chemical assist in dissolving catarrhs, which are responsible for the congestion associated with chest colds. It is also effective in healing sore throats, bronchitis, tuberculosis, and pneumonia. It is a soothing aid to all mucous membranes. Irish Moss eases such digestive ailments as gastritis, dyspepsia, nausea, heartburn, indigestion, constipation, and peptic and duodenal ulcers. When used topically, it provides relief to eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, sunburn, and chapped skin. Due to its strong alkaline nature, sea moss is effective in the relief and cure of bunions. The alkalinity of this magical herb is not attributed to sodium bicarbonate or potash, which are the major ingredients in many of the over the counter alkalizers. This has also made it an effective healing tool for a hangover. It replaces much of the ion content that is leached from the body as a result of the dehydrating effect attributed to the consumption of alcohol. It is also reported to be effective against cancer and radiation poisoning (due to its iodine content), halitosis, the formation of varicose veins, inflammation, dysentery, arteriosclerosis, and hypertension. Sea moss protects the body from fat and cholesterol build up. It has an anti-coagulant effect in the blood and clears up many bladder complaints. Below is one of my favorite smoothie recipes as of late. My fam at RawSoul in NYC introduced me to it and I am forever a loyal fan. Please check Eddie and Lillian out at www.rawsoul.com They are doing so many good and innovative works in the world and in the living foods community. I am truly thankful for knowing and learning from them...Bless Up..

The Truth is Organized>>Releasing Hypnotical Gases

OK, long (run-on sentence) but......I am listening to Organized Konfusions "Releasing Hypnotical Gases" off their first record (...a real record) circa 1991 (when it was put out) and I get an email from my good friend at N.O.A.A. with an image of the ice caps in 1991 and what they will look like in 2010. A few seconds after, I hear Pharoah Monch say:

"No need for sunlight, from concentration camps I escape with my sanity -- in 2010 every man will be subject to global warming, formless oval Millions of locusts swarming"

Cocoa Nibs & Mulberry Superfoods>>>

Cocoa Nibs

Cocoa beans are the seed of a fruit that grows on the cocoa tree. Cocoa trees originated in the Amazon basin, and they will only grow in a very warm, moist, shady environment. Cocoa beans contain many substances that have earned them the reputation as being nature's antidepressant. Cocoa beans contain three neurotransmitters that are associated with promoting a healthy mood and positive mental state: serotonin, dopamine and phenylethylamine.

Now, we are not speaking of Hersheys Chocolate. I am speaking of natural raw cocoa nibs. What's healthy is the cacao bean, minimally processed. How is this possible, something that only recently was thought of as an unhealthy, dangerous, guilty indulgence...a sign of dietary decadence, now being hailed as beneficial to everything from brain health to skin elasticity to cardiovascular health to anti-cancer and pretty much everything in between? It's simple: chocolate does not equal cacao bean, nor vice-versa; most candy and chocolate bars contain not only low levels of cacao bean compared to other unhealthy ingredients such as sugars, milk fat, artificial flavorings and so on, but the quality and processing of the cacao used in these products is often of low health benefits due to everything from alkalization to refining and processing and over-roasting the healthy elements right out of the beans.

But you want it raw!!! Cacao contains a wide array of unique properties and minerals, including high levels of sulfur and magnesium.

Mulberrys

Mulberry is one of the nutrition treasures of alternative health medicine that has many health benefits to all who eat it. Mulberry contains fiber, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, carbohydrates, iron and proteins essential to one’s good health. The fruit is found mainly in the subtropical regions of Asia, Africa and the Americas and can be black, red, pink or white in color. One benefit of Mulberry is that it contains anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are believed to contribute to the antioxidant properties of berries, and they are the reasons berries have their dark colors.

Mulberry juice is believed to be a good source of treating anemia and poor blood circulation. In Chinese medicine, people regularly mix Mulberry juice as a tonic and drink it to alleviate anemic symptoms and to improve their blood circulation. Mulberry also has the health benefit of soothing the nerves. When combined with Chinese schizandra and ligustrum, Mulberry is effective at soothing the nerves after a stressful day.Mulberries are a good source of resveratrol, a potent phytonutrient also found in grapes that researchers believe can prevent cancer and aid in the fight of existing cancers.Because of their resveratrol content, mulberries may be a tool in one's life extension arsenal, as resveratrol has shown in several studies to extend the life of mice. (Thank you mice!!)

In Turkey, a treatment for constipation is to eat white mulberries on an empty stomach with a glass of water. In China, tea made with mulberry paste is believed to strengthen one's hearing and vision. In several countries, mulberries are considered an effective remedy for prematurely gray hair. Be well!!! By the way, Whole Foods has these in stock.

A Bit Of Clae....

Just walked into these during my runnings today. I have always liked Clae for their extra clean and casual ads, nothing flashy, just to the point. These are called "The McQueen" Not a collabo with Alexander McQueen, I feel like that would be too obvious but, semi-predictable is kind of in right now, in the industry of wears, anyway...They are pretty classy though, depending on whose wearing them and with what...We are all about the balance in all things good and didn't want to short change you, you need at least one random shoe suggestion in between good music to check and your healing works. Just once in a while, to keep you on your toes....Especially, if the sharing is good...Check www.clae.com....Bless Up....

Stretching the spine: routines and health benefits

There are many health benefits to stretching the spine. In fact, various cultures have been aware of this fact for thousands of years. The Hindus developed yoga, a systematic series of poses combined with deep breathing, which invigorates the body and mind. The spine serves many important functions in the human body. It protects our spinal cord, and serves as the root of our nervous system. It also supports our upper body and enables us to stand up, bend, and twist. The backbone is the core of the body.

The Seated Forward Bend
helps to relieve tension in the back neck and shoulders and can be done just about anywhere and any time. It can be done by following these stop-by-step instructions.

1. Find a sturdy seat and scoot your bottom so that it is sitting right on the edge of it.

2. Separate your legs to slightly more than a hips width apart.

3. Bend forward from your hips while being careful to keep your back straight.

4. Drop your head and completely relax your neck and shoulders. Let your arms dangle loosely.

5. Bring your arms up and hold onto your elbows. Lean into the stretch even more.

6. Take a deep breath in and slowly exhale out. Repeat.

7. Sit up slowly. Take one more deep breath and exhale.

The Cobra, also known as the Bhujanga Asana, strengthens the spine, offers flexibility, and can be done by following these steps.

1. Lie down on your stomach. Hold your legs together as though they are stuck together with superglue. Place the palms of your hands underneath your shoulders with your forehead resting on the floor.

2. Inhale. Bring your head up so that you are looking straight ahead. Take a couple deep breaths. Use your back muscles to lift your chest as high as possible, take a couple deep breaths. Then lower your body back down again.

3. Inhale again. Come up while using your hands to push the trunk of your body up until you are bending from the middle of your spine. Breathe normally.

4. Walk hands in toward the body, straighten your arms, and lift your pelvis. Separate your legs and bend your knees so that you are up on your hands and knees. Drop your head down and reach it to your feet. Breathe normally and come back down on your belly again.

The Child’s Pose
is relatively easy to master and offers such benefits as increasing circulation to the lower back and abdominal area, and helps to relieve lower back pain, as well. It can be done as follows.

1. Get down on your hands and knees.

2. Take a deep breath and bend back so that your bottom is resting on your heels.

3. Rest your forehead on the floor.

4. Place your arms back by your side with palms facing upward.

5. Relax your body and take several breaths in.

6. Hold the position for a few minutes while breathing gently.

All three of these positions offer some of the benefits of stretching the spine. When done on a regular basis these poses can help mild back discomfort and improve other areas of physical and mental well-being. Once you have mastered them, you can enjoy the wonderful effects of stretching all of the time.
