THE BATTLE WITHIN: VEGAN, VEGETARIAN, OR PESCETARIAN.....

So I have decided to begome a pescetarian in January of '09. No applause because I have not been as successful as I should have been with my dietary restrictions. When I first made the decision, it was for a few reasons; digestive problems and ever since I saw a recording of animal cruelty within slaughter houses for the market, I never felt comfortable eating it. So I set out to eat only fish and I bragged about how I "don't eat meat" but still wore (and still have) leather boots, bags, eat eggs (baby chickens), etc. I remember sitting at lunch with my best friend Shannon and her asking me, "well if you don't eat meat because of how animals are treated, why are you wearing them?" I replied, "I know, don't tell me before I feel forced to give away all of my stuff" and laughed:(! I realized at that moment that I really didn't know WHY I decided to make my choice anymore.

Then the summer came.....awwwwww lord, BBQ's and I'm the only person asking for veggie burgers!? (of course they looked at me as though I was crazy) To make a long story short, I slipped a few times over the summer. Now, I choose not to label myself but to make decisions that are best for my personal goals for my body and health.

I haven't had meat in a while but I loooovvvveeee cheese and I am used to having substance so I eat fish. Today I decided to look up why I shouldn't eat dairy and I was curious to know how it was affecting my body. After reading some of the things I have found, I think it's best for me to start indulging in what natural things the creator has blessed us with! I am sure everyone on this blog knows what dairy does to your body, how it's not able to be broken down and it rots in your intestins, etc. but what I didn't know is the effects of parasites that meat and fish included have on your body....one being the damaging affects it can have on the brain and health affects. It can cause Blood sugar imbalances, bloating, sugar cravings, fatigue, insomnia, weight gain or loss, teeth grinding or TMJ, diarrhea, itching, irritability, malnutrition, anemia, and immune deficiency amongst many others.

The issue is that with some of these parasites, mainly those created by pork (tateworms), is that the eggs from these animals (including fish) once swallowed can latch on to the intestine wall. Once that is done and the eggs hatch, the enzymes (researches are not sure specifically how) can go into the blood stream and enter the blood to brain barrier and cause a disease called neurocysticercosis. This disease allows the parasite to feed amongst your brain cells to cause brain cell damage, headaches, nausea, dizziness, altered mental states, and SEIZURES!!!! Over 50 million people die around the world, mainly in 3rd world countries from this disease. The issue is that many people, including americans, have parasites and won't feel the affects of their symptoms until years later.

Here are a list of parasites and what illness they may cause:

Giardia lamblia are protozoan parasites that infect humans via consumption of contaminated food and water. It’s commonly found in untreated water supplies, and is one of the most common causes of diarrhea in travelers, but people sometimes pick them up while swimming in ponds and lakes. Giardia is responsible for the condition known as giardiasis that causes diarrhea, bloating, flatulence, abdominal cramping, weight loss, greasy stools, and dehydration.

Toxoplasma gondii is another protozoan organism commonly found in the colon. Cats and kittens often carry it, and it can be transmitted to humans who handle of cats – especially their feces. You can also be infected with them by breathing in their eggs. Toxoplasma is responsible for the disease toxoplasmosis, which causes chills, fever, headaches and fatigue. If a pregnant woman contracts toxoplasmosis, it can lead to miscarriage, or birth defects such as blindness and mental retardation.

Roundworms are are the most common intestinal parasite in the world, affecting over one billion people. They’re also one of the largest parasites, and can grow to up to 30 inches in length. Humans can contract a roundworm infection by eating improperly cooked meat, or by handling dogs or cats infested with roundworms. Symptoms include loss of appetite, allergic reactions, coughing, abdominal pain, edema, sleep disorders, and weight loss.

Hookworms are able to penetrate the human skin, and often enter the body through the feet when people walk barefoot through contaminated areas. They can be all over the world, in warm, moist tropical areas, and can live in the intestines for up to fifteen years. A hookworm infection may cause symptoms such as itchy skin, blisters, nausea, dizziness, anorexia, and weight loss.

Trichinella parasites, caused by the consumption of raw or undercooked pork, can can mimic the symptoms of up to fifty different diseases. Possible symptoms of infection include muscle soreness, fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, edema of the lips and face, difficulty breathing, difficulty speaking, enlarged lymph glands, and extreme dehydration.

Tapeworms are the largest colon parasites that are known to infect humans. There are different types of tapeworms that infect different animals – there are beef tapeworms, pork tapeworms, fish tapeworms, and dog tapeworms. They can grow to several feet in length and live in the intestines for up to 25 years. Symptoms of a tapeworm infection are diarrhea, abdominal cramping, nausea, and change of appetite.

Flukes, or Trematodas, are small flatworms that can penetrate the human skin when an individual is swimming or bathing in contaminated water. Flukes can travel throughout the body and settle in the liver, lungs or intestines. Symptoms of a fluke infection include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and swelling.

Hope this was alarming to you as it was to me!

The "Be Well" Thanksgiving Fast:: Thanksgiving or Thanks-taking?

Before reading, please know that the earth doesn't revolve around my thoughts only, I figured to extend an offering to those who are heavy Thanksgiving enthusiasts and want to approach it with a different level of awareness, nutritionally.

Here is the drill. Many "Americans" think of Thanksgiving as a wonderful time to celebrate getting out of school for a long weekend, and eating a great dinner. One where you gain about 15 extra pounds and increase your chances of diabetes, high cholesterol and loss of energy. Or, maybe they think it is the start of the "Christ-mas" holiday season. What is the real meaning? A few of us here at the blog don't celebrate thanks giving, nor do we wish to indulge in any false holidays. No offense to those that do but it's more than long over due to take a stand internally. Can you imagine what people will say if you tell them you are fasting on thanks giving.

As a result to this never ending saga of "American" holidays that mean nothing "to us", we announce:::: (((silent drum role please)))

On this day we will only intake raw vegetable and fruit juice and water only. A juice fast is considered an extreme form of detoxification because no solid food is consumed. This is the best feast, while also honoring our ancestors, our needs for health, energy, vitality and beauty? Lets do it! Leave a comment.

"In the eight century Muslims conquered
Spain, Portugal and France and controlled it for 700 years
They never mention this in history class
cause old ways are threatened when you get the real lesson
Moors from Baghdad, Turkey threatened European Christians
Meaning, there way of life; hence the Crusades for Christ
On November 25th, 1491
Santiago defeats the last Muslim stronghold, Grenada
King Ferdinand gave thanks to God for victory
And the Pope of Rome and declared this date to forever be
A day of Thanksgiving for all European Christians
.. Now listen, when you celebrate Thanksgiving
What you are actually celebrating
is the proclamation of the Pope of Rome
Who later, in league with Queen Isabella
sent Cardinal Ximenos to Spain
to murder any blacks that resisted Christianity
These Moors, these black men and women
were from Baghdad, Turkey
And today, you eat the turkey, for your Thanksgiving day
as the European Powers destroyed the Turkeys
Who were the forefathers of your mothers and fathers"

Vegan and Wheat-Free Cornbread(That doesn't taste like cardboard)

Bless....I'm not big on too many Holidays, but knowing that the earth doesn't revolve around my thoughts only, I figured to extend an offering to those who are heavy Thanksgiving enthusiasts and want to approach it with a different level of awareness, nutritionally. I started making this some years ago, after discovering that I was terribly allergic to wheat products. Yes, there are a host of Gluten and Wheat-free products on the market, but five out of 10 of them aren't the most palatable (borderline cardboard). I have found that whether you are vegan, allergic to wheat, or just love your bird, this recipe will not disappoint....Travel Safe and Light....Delight in giving thanks for your moments, the people, the places, and the magic in your everyday....Love..Light..and Magic Abound

(1) Cup of Cornmeal
(1/2) Cup of Brown Rice Flour
(1/2) Cup of Quinoa Flour
(1/4) Cup of Olive Oil
(1) Cup of Soy Milk
(1/4) Cup of Sweetener (Agave or Maple Syrup are fine)
(1/2) tsp of aluminum-free baking powder
(1/4) tsp of sea salt

In one bowl combine flours, cornmeal, and baking powder and in another, combine soy milk, oil, sweetener, and sea salt. Fork together dry ingredients and whisk the wet ingredients, then combine the two. Mix with a wooden spoon until everything is integrated w/o over mixing. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Grease about an 8" glass pan w/a vegetable based margarine and olive oil, bake for 20-25 minutes or until Golden. Enjoy...*If you find that something that you have eaten, leaves you with a sour belly, end that meal w/ a glass of lemon water..Heighten your awareness and listen to your body..In Light

New Chameleon Species Discovered in East Africa>>No pun

It never stops. I wonder why.

Dr Andrew Marshall, from the Environment Department at the University of York, first spotted the animal while surveying monkeys in the Magombera Forest when he disturbed a twig snake eating one.

The specimen was collected, tested and compared to two others found by scientists in the same area and has now been named Kinyongia magomberae (the Magombera chameleon) in research published in the African Journal of Herpetology.

Dr Marshall is co-author of the study alongside researchers from the Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali, the South African National Biodiversity Institute, Anglia Ruskin University and the University of Stellenbosch.

He said: "Discovering a new species is a rare event so to be involved in the identification and naming of this animal is very exciting.

"Chameleon species tend to be focused in small areas and, unfortunately, the habitat this one depends on, the Magombera Forest, is under threat. Hopefully this discovery will support efforts to provide this area and others like it with greater protection."

Dr Marshall, who is also Director of Conservation Science at the Flamingo Land theme park and zoo, is leading a research project investigating changes in the Magombera Forest. The forest is an important resource for people in the area and home to wildlife, including endangered red colobus monkeys.

The project combines research into the biology of the forest with education for local people on how to manage it in a more sustainable way. The ultimate aim is to develop protected status for the forest and find alternative ways of meeting the needs of local communities.

Anyone else wanna comment??? NAS AND DAMIAN MARLEY HOST HIP HOP PANEL IN DC

With the release of Nas and Damian's collaborative album Distant Relatives approaching, the two will be organizing and hosting a panel discussion on hip hop's and reggaes global impact on society here in DC. The panel will be moderated by MTV's Sway Calloway and will include legends such as DJ Kool Herc, DJ Red Alert,Reggaes Daddy U-Roy and King Jammy.

The event will take place at the "National Geographic Live" building on December 12, 2009 at 7pm. The discussion will be featured on a future documentary and broadcasted live at natgeomusic.net. The tickets are $25 each at NGL's box office so get your tickets FAST!!!!!

OK, so now that I made the PSA, here is my concern.....why do I have to pay to speak or LISTEN to what others feel the state of hip hop is in current society? I understand a donation but the mandatory cost personally makes me feel that the message, especially for the young, is not as important. I know it's a business at the end of the day but they both make enough money to invite individuals to hear the discussion for free.

Hip Hop is great but what's even greater are the artists that's never heard! We should be discussing it's positive impact but also the negative impact that it's having on our community and how we can all contribute to the change by supporting artists with a positive or more artistic approach. Dj's, radio stations, labels, etc all have a hand in what we hear and digest into our thoughts and that contributes to who we are. Feed us love, life, inspiration, and hope....we all know the struggle but let us see the light of that struggle as well (without the bling bling and fast cars and the disrespect of who I am...A WOMAN)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, I complained enough....it would be interesting to see what they will be discussing and after all, it's taking place in our home DC.
