Quieting the Mind and Everything Else...

I was on the train this morning thinking, how much I truly appreciate my headphones and how they provide me with the power of tuning in, in order to tune out. There always seems to be that one song that transports you to this whole other realm, you know, that song that you completely forgot you had on your ipod, until it comes on, causing you to almost miss your stop.(I heard a couple of those today) I love that feeling, you forget where you are for a second. Its good to be taken out of your body once in a while. It reminds you of the space that exist outside the physical world and that you can go there anytime you want to. It shows you the many dimensions of the mind. It also keeps us humble to the energies of the world that are bigger and more powerful than us. When you think of the train and the people and the noise, the words quiet or meditation don't really come to mind. It really depends on what you consider quieting the mind or meditation to be. Its not just a room laced with your favorite, colors, smells, lighting and Om's abound, well it is that, if that's what you want to create. More than that, its focusing on one thing and one thing only, your breath. If you can be at home, put aside 20 minutes and find a quiet space, sit in a comfortable position on the floor. (A yoga mat or folded blanket is fine) The power in the meditation is closing your eyes and focusing on clearing the mind of all thoughts while focusing on your breath. Deep inhales and exhales through the nose are ideal, creating a cleansing and calming effect. This is a lot harder than it sounds. Think about how fast the mind moves, we are constantly in thought, even at rest. Once you have gotten to that space where you are focusing on your breath, and that alone, you want to hold on to that moment for as long as you can. Finally, try to stop thinking about everything, just for 20 minutes. With this, you will experience a moment of clarity, a deep calm. The gift that clarity gives us, is space, space to accommodate the next series of events that do occur, every second in life. Sometimes, we need a little spring cleaning upstairs, out with the old, to make way for the new. Its the meditation that travels with you. If you are walking down the street, on the train, or waiting in line somewhere, it will always be effective, its about your focus and commitment to it. Treat yourself to something everyday, that is what we work for. It could be a quiet moment, a long walk, your favorite treat, your favorite person, a new record, a bath, etc. It doesn't take a lot of money to feel shiny and fresh. We get so caught up in the catch up game, that we lose site of our healing and wellness within it. Push past the limitations that you set for yourself. Be something that you have never been. Delight in all that is you. In Light... Be well...
