Chakra Healing: A Basic Intro

The word Chakra comes from the Sanskrit, meaning "wheel" or "disk". These moderators of subtle energy are traditionally depicted as lotus flowers, each resonating at different frequencies, corresponding to the colors of the rainbow. Although the human energy system is said to have many chakras, the traditional Hindu system names seven major ones. The chakra system has developed into a rich and valuable explanation of the holistic nature of humankind. It outlines how, in order to maintain a healthy, balanced life, we must attend, not just to certain physical dysfunctions that may occur but, to our emotional, intellectual, and spiritual needs as well. Each of the seven chakras deals with different parts of this bigger picture and directs us to those areas where we might be out of balance.

Muladhara or the 1st Chakra is the Root represented in the body by the adrenal glands. (bones and skeletal structure) These glands produce adrenaline, the hormone essential for our primitive "fight or flight"response. Its color is red and its focus is on survival and physical needs. Imbalance in this chakra can result in mental lethargy, and a lack of inner stillness "spaciness". Good scents for this chakra are: Cedarwood, Myrrh, and Patchouli. Crystals: Hematite, Tiger's eye, and Bloodstone.
Svadhisthana or the 2nd Chakra is represented in the body by the lower abdomen, between the navel and genitals. (bladder, prostate, womb) Our relationship with our own sexuality and issues of emotional balance rule this chakra. Its color is orange and imbalance in this chakra results in an imbalanced sex drive, emotional instability, and feelings of isolation. Good scents for this chakra are: Jasmine, rose, and sandalwood. Crystals: Citrine, Carnelian, and Golden Topaz.
Manipura or the 3rd Chakra is represented in the body by the Solar Plexus/Pancreas (digestive system and muscles). This chakra rules our personal power and self will. Its color is yellow and imbalance in this chakra can result in oversensitivity to criticism, neeed to be in control, and low self-esteem. Good scents for this chakra are: Vetivert, Ylang ylang, and Bergamont. Crystals: Adventurine quartz, Sunstone, and Yellow topaz.
Anahata or the 4th Chakra is represented in the body by the Thymus. (heart, chest, lungs, and circulation) This chakra rules our love and relationships. Its color is green and imbalance in this chakra can result in fears of betrayal, co-dependency, and melancholy. Good scents for this chakra are: Rose, Bergamont, and Melissa. Crystals: Watermelon tourmaline, Rose quartz, and Emerald.
Vishuddha or the 5th Chakra is represented in the body by the Thyroid (mouth, throat, ears). This chakra rules our communication and self expression. Its color is blue and imbalance in this chakra can result in perfectionism, inability to express emotions, and blocked creativity. Good scents for this chakra are: Chamomile and Myrrh. Crystals: Lapis lazuli, Turquoise, and Aquamarine.
Ajna or the 6th Chakra is represented in the body by the Pituitary gland (eyes and base of skull). This chakra rules Intuition and wisdom. Its color is Indigo and imbalance in this chakra can result in learning difficulties, hallucinations, and nightmares. Good scents for this chakra are: Hyacinth, Violet, and Rose geranium. Crystals: Amethyst, Flourite, and Azurite.
Sahasrara or the 7th Chakra is represented in the body by the Pineal gland (upper skull, cerebral cortex, and skin). This chakra rules Spirituality. Its color is Violet and imbalances in this chakra can result in depression, obsessive thinking, and confusion. Good scents for this chakra are: Lavender, Frankincense, and Rosewood. Crystals: Amethyst, Clear quartz, Diamond.

This may all seem like a lot to swallow but, just keep in mind that scents, colors, numbers, and what's going on in the sky, play a huge role in how we think, move, feel, and see. Its all divine mathematics. Be patient with all of your processes of self-discovery...Bless..Peace..Be Well...
