The Superfood Series: Manuka Honey

It can be so overwhelming purchasing honey nowadays, but, its kind of overwhelming buying jeans too, or anything for that matter because there are so many varieties, interpretations, and versions to choose from.  So much so, that we get caught up in aesthetics and forget about the benefits and function of things.  So, you go into a grocery store and you find the aisle where the sweeteners are, you look for the honey and there are about 15 -20 different varieties.  Some people just need honey and get the cheapest one.  Then you have the folks that want a particular taste, preferring orange blossom over buckwheat and are able to make the distinctions.  Finally, there is the person that isn't really into honey at all, but appreciates its healing benefits and just wants the best one.  I think I am a bit of all of these only because its a pleasure to see the balance in the things that we purchase, its important that what we spend goes to something that we support and feel good about, then on top of that provide all the other little extras that we are looking for.  Its definitely more of a life thing, a  bit bigger than honey but, its all connected somehow, isn't it?  Manuka honey is a premium medicinal-grade honey, exclusively found in New Zealand.  Honey is an ancient and sacred tonic that has been used by all for more years than most can count.  While all types possess healing properties, Manuka honey has been known to have a higher antibacterial activity than other varieties.  It contains an additional antibacterial component derived from the Leptospermum plant, indigenous to New Zealand.  The enzyme that produces hydrogen peroxide is destroyed when  most honey is exposed to heat and light.  Manuka honey is stable, so there is no loss of nutrients in storage.  Based on recent studies, Manuka honey has been known to effectively treat the following: Athletes Foot, Arthritis, Sore throats, Acne, Blisters, Cold Sores, Ring worm, Wrinkles, Rashes, Burns, Ulcers, Infections, Insect Bites, Acid Reflux, IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), Nail fungus, Gastritis, Cold and Flu Symptoms, Eczema, Dermatitis, Psoriasis, Wounds, and Abrasions, Aches and Pains, and Staph Infections. Its kind of like a Natural Lysol that you can eat.LOL!!!  It can be used as a food or for topical preparations.  I always suggest that you definitely get your honey for everyday use and have Manuka as an extra, again its one of nature's jewels, organically occurring, just waiting to be harvested.   Please check your local health food store, they are usually sold in small batches, a little bit goes a long way.  Be well.....

Yes, definitely should pick your normal honey for everyday use, and save the manuka as a 'medicine' for when required.

Another important point though, this does depend on just which manuka honey it is. Being a natural product, it naturally varies in potency. Much manuka honey just manuka in flavour, with no special properties. Only some of it contains the additional unique healing properties that the research into it is based on. For medicinal use, it is important that a UMF® manuka honey is used. This is the industry standard for proving that it has been independently tested (and that testing audited) and does contain the stated level of antibacterial activity. Look for the UMF® mark on jars to prove this.

Here are some good examples of true UMF manuka honey (a UK based site but everyone can see the examples).

Interesting Post. Manuka Honey is definitely gaining a lot of notoriety for its amazing healing properties. We'll be seeing a lot more of it in the future.
