On Holidays . . .

On 'holidays' I always think of this song. At times the song is harsh, but the overall message is what's important:

[lyrics]"most holidays we celebrate ain't nothin but scams, and lies, and tricks
and all the real meaning be lost/

for me it's time and a half or just another day off . . . "

this was harsh. I was offended but I assume the truth is supposed to hurt. um yeah...I am white..."cracker" offends me...what can I say. I support the blog but this took me for a loop. I understand the point you are trying to make but it hurt my feelings I cant lie. I guess thats the point right. I cant say it any differently. I don't celebrate Christmas. I am Hebrew.

Josie,

OF COURSE I would not deliberately try to offend anyone so that definitely was NOT the point... That's why I prefaced it. I don't use the word cracker (or a lot of the other words in the song) because I think it's counterproductive. However, the reason I think this is a good song is because to me the point is to think about all of the 'holidays' we've been given and what they mean for us, and whether we really have something to celebrate before we blindly follow them. Critical thinking and questioning is always the point -- never offensiveness or hurt. I hope that you don't stop supporting the blog because of this. This was solely my decision and not that of the other contributors. Peace always.

im white and i agree to what you say. People still don't get the fact that hate for what anyone has done wont solve anything. that means all races. Coperate america is own by whites and enslaving everyone so yes we are all owned. THe racism between the races is only independent teaching that some parents hold on to and teach their children. the only thing to change it is us.

american HISTORY, however what you should know and look up for yourself is the fact that to this very second blacks are enslaving other blacks in africa, i could go on listing how disproportionate crime rates are and stuff but i really dont care to change a blacks opinion on anything i dont value it enough to care, but dont think blacks have a monopoly on suffering, arabs had white slaves. read Race Evolution Behavior w w w DOT charlesdarwinresearch DOT o r g has a pdf of it. or not i dont care.

Well thank you for assuming what I do and don't know about American History. What you should do is learn how to read. As whats going on in Africa has nothing to do with American History. It is natural for the strong to overpower who they think is weak in comparison to themselves. As we see done with humans as well as with animals... I go to school for Anthropology I no more than you do about "Human Behavior" You comment is insignificant

The curse of technology like blogs or website means your name and address and the truth are gonna be inevitable..set urself free

I bet that everyone commenting is under 40..and therefore, have no idea what they're even talking about...I am under 40 and I can't even begin to imagine what it was like for slaves and those who suffered the Holocaust...let's enjoy life, with our current freedom, made possible for us by those that fought and suffered...that's respect

TheDCist (Sommer Mathis) said...

you're right, we all KNOW about what went on...yes, that's knowledge, not respect...but to comment & judge like we've actually been thru or witnessed slavery or the Holocaust ourselves is totally disrespectful; doesn't matter which perspective...it's all unnecessary. Respect for our ancestors is best served by utilizing what has been made possible for us, and moving on...not ranting on about how blacks and jews were enslaved, or how whites feel they r being treated poorly in the present day...

oppressed*

i worry about humanity sometimes... I seriously think it might take like an alien invasion for the whole human race to let it go and be as one... :-\

well said Tarica. Honestly when I thought about it after I wrote it I am sorry for writing it. I know its not your wrds. Its the song. But after playing for a friend a minute ago they said and I felt like everything they spoke on is true. I wish there was no need for oppression in this world. Lies and deception have and will lead u s to destruction. Keep doing your thing. Thank you. We all live on a small rock with water covering most of it but, we tend to forget the ocean life and the animals and insects that inhabit the planet as well. If another species came to earth to destroy us, would we be humans and not a race then? Just a thought, that said were all HUMANS!!

White people will never understand black people and vice versa. It's just one of those things that won't happen until our backs are against the wall together.

Wow, I would have to make this statement to the comments posted in generally and mainly to Kachinga.

What I would like to say first and foremost is that the point in the post was to basically say that the focus of holidays are out of whack! Christmas for example is a day for selfish needs and wants that has been commercialized. It's purpose is out of focus....it's purpose is to remeber the presence of christ, love, or whichever you would like to call it within us and everyone else. Most of our holidays are made from false prophecies (columbus (who was not the first to travel to america and took it by force), thanksgiving (the day many indians were rapped and murdered after they graciosly provided their food hospitality to the invaders), and many other holidays.

The term "cracker" in the song was followed after the statement about columbus and I would think in reference to those who have abused this country and the natives in it that we continue to celebrate. Not you!

Lastly, Kachinga..."black on black" violence regardless if it's in Africa or America, is a product of the oppressive system that was designed by europeans. this started with "class" system that declared the more pure you were (closest to arian white) the better and that put blacks on the bottom. Not b/c they were inferior of course, Africa had the best universities in Mali, they were masters of boatmanship (allowed them to travel to north america way before columbus), philosophy, etc. They had one of the best class systems and governments that are now the models for your nations capital and the foundation of this country, even christianity. Those are facts, please read books that are noted by unbias authors such as Ivan Van Sertima (they came before columbus) or Cheikh Diop (precolonial black africa) are two good starts.

The violence you are referring to in africa is not motivated by their own government, it is executed through the government. Please keep in mind that other Continents/Countries own parts of Africa. NOTHING is done without their knowing and doing. These countries supply these villages and govt's with the weapons they use to slaughter families and drugs to induce young kids.

FYI, arian whites in america burned indians while they were awake for no reason. Chopped heads off of indians for fun b/c they were bored, and used machetes to cut unborn children from women's stomachs. AND THAT WAS FROM THE HISTORIAN WHO IS NOT BLACK, HOWARD ZINN THAT EVERYONE KNOWS AND LOVE IN A PEOPLES HISTORY OF AMERICA!

doesn't that torchure sound familiar!!!!!!! arians did that before the presence of blacks and prior to europeans invasion, those were not methods of torchure. so the question is, where do you think they got this madness from???????????? wasn't African culture, if so, they might have stopped europeans from invading and I would be home now!!!!! They were not a ppl of such forceful and violent acts. yes they had wars, but they were territorial and they used weapons but not in the way of greeks and europeans. Please read precolonial black africa, it's good and the author has been noted for having an authentic approach to his writings.

The thing about african and african american history is that it is the only history that continues to be distorted. if you would like to read more, I would be gladly to provide you with some good, unbiased reads.

this was not to offend anyone, just the truth so that we can accept it without judgement and move on so we can all have equality and respect regardless of race!

be blessed

Maybe I'm just really hungover or maybe you are but I have no idea what you're trying to say "Freedom".

I don't get hungover so it's not me:)! I responded to this statement that you have wrote:

"blacks are enslaving other blacks in africa, i could go on listing how disproportionate crime rates are and stuff but i really dont care to change a blacks opinion on anything i dont value it enough to care"

I stated why there is "black on black" enslavement and violence. The product of what we have become is a result from the systems that have been thought of and put in place that continues to impact our culture...education, our communities, and our relationship with other african peoples throughout the world.

So simply I wanted to say that "history" is misrepresented when it comes to african history, even in america. And if your going to make a statement like that and encourage someone to "read" (which I am sure most of us on the blog do), make sure your materials are not bias and promotes the truth.

Truth is the only way to enlightenment.

be blessed:)

be blessed and enjoy your holidays:)
