Kale - Best Source Of Vitamin A, K & Beta Carotene

When it comes to crowning the vegetable with the most vitamin A, K and beta carotene, kale is king! A cup of fresh boiled kale has over 1,000 percent of the percent daily value of vitamin K, and over 150 percent of the percent daily value of vitamin A and beta carotene. Kale is also unusually high in vitamin C, manganese and dietary fiber. Because of its high levels of vitamin K, people who are taking anti-coagulants should avoid this vegetable. Kale is well known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. The reasons for this is because kale contains powerful antioxidants, such as beta carotene and vitamin C. Many scientist and nutrition experts believe that antioxidants play a major role in the battle against heart disease, cancer and age-related diseases.

Kale is the food of wonders for many dieter because it is very low in calories and is saturated with vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. Kale is also good for the heart and for controlling blood sugar levels because it is high in dietary fiber. A cup of fresh kale can have as low as 40 calories, and contains no cholesterol and fat. Like many vegetables, kale is very sensitive to high heat. Cooking kale in high heat will destroy many of its nutrients. For best results, boiled kale in a closed pan or use a pressure cooker. If you are not scared of calories, use flaxseed oil for dressing because it is very high in omega-3.

Alkaline Foods

Our body ph is normally 7.3 and so more alkaline than acidic in nature. To keep this ph maintained we need to eat more of alkaline food rather than acidic food. Needless to say there are several benefits of alkaline food.

All this care in consuming alkaline food leads to great benefits. The ph of the body controls and affects all the functions of the body. The brain which is the commander of the body cannot store fat cells so it gets all its energy directly from the blood that flows through it. With the ph dropping the brain finds it difficult to absorb energy from the blood cells. So having a diet comprising of over 80 % alkaline food is very beneficial to the proper functioning of the brain. Further the heart which is a vital organ of the body is also affected if the ph level of the body gets altered. With a higher acidic level the blood cells change their polarity from negative to positive and then stick to the negative vein walls causing clogged arteries. This serious problem leading to heart attacks can be overcome if alkaline food is eaten on a regular basis. Mineral absorption is optimal if alkaline food forms over 80 % of ones diet. When the body ph is maintained all functions are carried out fully well and this ph level can only be maintained if the food eaten is alkalizing.

Serious cell degeneration can be controlled and the process of aging be slowed down if alkaline food is the major source of nutrition. Alkaline food prevents the body from feeling fatigue and stress causing great vitality and vigor. Not only does one feel good from the inside but it translates into most of his outside activities too. A healthy person is much less prone to depression and illness than one who is fatigued and unhealthy.
Consuming alkaline food also helps to not only prevent but also cure many chronic diseases like arthritis etc.

Simply put, the benefits of alkaline food are tremendous. Health and vitality are regained which cause inner satisfaction and one feels he is able to achieve much more in his day to day living.

The following list is of alkaline foods that are great for establishing the alkalinity of your body and reducing the acidity of your blood:

Banksy @ Bristol Museum

Graffiti artist Banksy has unveiled his most ambitious British project to date, a made over museum in his home town of Bristol.

Staged in the council-owned City Museum and Art Gallery, Banksy v Bristol Museum was such a closely guarded secret even senior councillors were unaware of the plans, while visitors and staff were told that filming had been taking place. The exhibition features animatronics, installations and a sensory display.

Jon Kay takes a look at some of the artworks on display and talks to Kate Brindley, Museum Director.

Bad Moon Rising

For January, February, March, and April, rainfall has been pretty close to average compared to previous years. But in May, we got 2.6 inches more rain than average and so far in June, we’re 1.3 inches above average. This puts us on pace to be close to a three inch rain surplus this month too.

So why are we getting so much rain this time of year? Global Warming??????

The past couple of years we saw very heavy rain throughout the plains. Patterns have now shifted that towards the east coast to where we’re getting the rain and they’re not. We’ve seen droughts in the past couple summers, so the question is, will it be a dry summer? Or continue to pelt us with the wet stuff? We are going to see this rain continuing for us probably through the summer off and on. We’ll go through some wet spells and some dry spells followed by another round of rain. I don’t see us going back into a drought.

The high-altitude jet stream that guides the movement of weather across the country has been south of its normal position over the last couple of weeks, sending a series of storms across the Midwest and East, explained meteorologist Ed O'Lenic of the federal Climate Prediction Center.

It's a lot like an extended spring. For whatever reason (global warming), and the atmosphere only knows the answer.

While roman calendars say summer has begun, that refers to astronomical summer. Meteorological, or weather summer as I call it, begins July 1.

Parts of New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and eastern Pennsylvania have received rain totals 1.5 to 3.75 inches greater than normal for the past weeks, according to the Northeast Regional Climate Center at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.

One possible reason is "persistence," said Kathryn Vreeland, a climatologist at the center. Sometimes a weather pattern just persists, she said, "just hangs out there until something comes along to make things happen differently."(global warming)

Some climatologists make up excuses and say "for some reason people have this feeling that they ought to be able to remember, in their lifetime, something similar" to what is happening. "That is not the way it works. There is a lot of natural variability." Which may be true, but our climate changes have been extreme due to our treatment of our planet. People in normally damp cities have gone through a near-record spring dry spell, boosting the threat of wildfires in western Washington state.

Could El Nino be at fault? Always blame someone right...Never really face the truth.
El Ninos are periodic weather phenomena that develop in the Pacific. It looks as if one is developing, but it's not under way yet so what are they saying. Ever since I was studying meteorology in college there have always been excuses for our weather changes. No one ever wanted to face the truth in my classes.

Hmmm..... global warming?

Perhaps it's simply time to turn to Creedence Clearwater Revival:

"Long as I remember, the rain been comin' down,

"Clouds of myst'ry pourin', confusion on the ground,

"Good men through the ages, tryin' to find the sun,

"And I wonder, still I wonder, who'll stop the rain."

Be well.

M’Afrique

There is an image, an idea of Africa that lives deep in human imagination. YOU CAN EVEN WORK WITH SOMEONE AND THEY THINK THEY KNOW WHAT IT MEANS BUT THEY HAVE NO CLUE. Deep down they want to be that image, but can't because its a form that often transcends the power of the word and its profile lies under layers of conscious retrieval. It is inexplicable yet undeniable and they would rather see it/you gone then to allow it/you to shine...This is part of the drive behind the latest seating collection “M’Afrique” firmed by the italian company Moroso. This project is dedicated to Africa. I suggest to check out the rest at Moroso. CLICK IMAGES FOR BETTER RESOLUTION>>BLESS

Michael Joseph Jackson: The Fro Years

What can you really say? Think about how much you used to question this man. Then think about yourself. Then don't think about yourself....

Can it be I stayed away too long

Did I leave your mind when I was gone

It's not my thing trying to get back

But this time let me tell you where I'm at

You don't have to worry 'cause I'm coming

Back to where I should have always stayed

And now I've heard the maybe to your story

And it's enough love for me to stay

Frolab thought it fitting that they spray some sheen on the “pre-Jheri era” and honor the years that young Michael Jackson rocked that amazing afro.

Frolab presents “The Fro Years” – a desktop wallpaper of young Michael Jackson images highlighting his iconic afro.

Kayaking

OK, You have been in the office long enough. You don't exercise enough and you eat terribly. You aren't like most people and you want to switch it up right?

Trying to incorporate a regular fitness routine while balancing work and home life is a challenge many face. But with constant reminders on staying healthy, and an ever growing American waistline, making exercise part of our daily lives is essential.

Who doesn't love the being in the water on a 90 degree day? Kayaking involves strength training, flexibility and aerobic workouts. The high number of repetition works your abs, arms, shoulders, back and chest. In addition to the physical workout you'll get, being outdoors and taking in nature, even for a short period of time, helps the mind and body relax and unwind. I am not a rapper :)Athletes, people looking to get into shape, and those who enjoy the outdoors are perfect candidates for canoeing and kayaking. Plus, its a great thing to do with your loved ones. I have had some of the best conversation of my life in the water. Sounds embryonic right. Even mi madre knows.

How to Get Started:

Many shops offer 'demo days' to try out equipment and get information on lessons. "I strongly recommend lessons". Lessons can range from introductory to advanced as well as competitive and race training. At schools such as Lake Mead's students learn the basics like how to enter and exit a kayak, how to properly hold a paddle and how to master a variety of different strokes.

No Brakes:::MASSAN MASH SF

Peace to my good friend MASSAN in San Franscico. Get Some brakes man!!!

Clearing the Air::What is a Vegan?

Six people asked me this question today so this is a simple explanation to clear the air. Vegetarians do not eat meat, fish, or poultry. Vegans, in addition to being vegetarian, do not use other animal products and by-products such as eggs, dairy products, honey, leather, fur, silk, wool, cosmetics, and soaps derived from animal products.

People choose to be vegan for health, environmental, and/or ethical reasons. For example, some vegans feel that one promotes the meat industry by consuming eggs and dairy products. That is, once dairy cows or egg-laying chickens are too old to be productive, they are often sold as meat; and since male calves do not produce milk, they usually are raised for veal or other products. Some people avoid these items because of conditions associated with their production.

Many vegans choose this lifestyle to promote a more humane and caring world. They know they are not perfect, but believe they have a responsibility to try to do their best, while not being judgmental of others. A healthy and varied vegan diet includes fruits, vegetables, plenty of leafy greens, whole grain products, nuts, seeds, and legumes.

Protein::::THE BIG MYTH!!!!

It is very easy for a vegan diet to meet the recommendations for protein as long as calorie intake is adequate. Strict protein planning or combining is not necessary. The key is to eat a varied diet.

Almost all foods except for alcohol, sugar, and fats are good sources of protein. Vegan sources include: potatoes, whole wheat bread, rice, broccoli, spinach, almonds, peas, chickpeas, peanut butter, tofu, soy milk, lentils, kale...Don't be mislead by people that question your protein intake. You truthfully don't need a ton of protein to live a healthy active lifestyle. Focus on you and what your body feels it needs because in some way and form, the body will cue you to its daily needs. Be well.

Access to Life::::India

India’s AIDS epidemic has been fueled mainly by unprotected sex. Estimates are that more than 2.5 million Indians are living with HIV. Women are particularly at risk of having the virus passed to them by their husbands or regular partners, who have been infected through paid sex. In some parts of India, injected drugs also play a significant role in the spread of HIV.

6 Golden Rules for a Successful Summer Detox

Happy First Day of Summer, June 21st. Although we tend to think of detox in January after the heavy food and excesses of winter and the holiday season summer is an ideal time to detox. When the weather is warmer it is so much easier to follow a detox of fruit and fresh salads and leave the heavy stodgy hard to digest food behind.

By following a 7 - 14 day detox plan that focuses on nutrient packed fresh foods close to their natural state and avoiding processed foods laden with sugar, fat, salt and artificial additives you will allow your body to function more efficiently. There is no need to starve yourself or go hungry. By eating food that is packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber you will feel much more satisfied.

6 Golden Rules for a Successful Summer Detox.
,

Cut out the Junk

Avoid fast foods, processed foods, ready meals, salty snacks, fizzy drinks, high fat foods, foods high in sugar like cookies, chocolate, cakes, and most ready made desserts. These foods often contain artificial additives that poison your body. They lack vitamins, minerals and fiber that your body needs for the detox system to function efficiently. Limit red meat and dairy products as they are often contain hormones and antibiotic residues.

Feast on Fresh Whole Foods

Eating foods in their natural state will provide your body with high levels of nutrients that will support your body's detoxification system improving your health. Food starts to loose its nutrients once it is stored so look for fruit and vegetables that are in season and not imported. Organically produced food has more nutrients and taste and no toxic pesticides.

Eat a High Raw Diet

Many vitamins and minerals are lost from food by cooking. It is easy to eat a high raw fruit and vegetable diet on a summer detox by juicing your fruit and vegetables or making them into smoothies, uncooked blended soups and salads.

Some foods need to be cooked to make them more palatable and easier to digest and steaming them lightly will help to retain their nutrients better than boiling them. You can stir-fry food instead of heating oil to a high temperature which will damage it and create toxic substances.

Living salads and sprouted seeds and beans are readily available in many supermarkets and whole food markets and stores.

Rehydrate(Drink More Water!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Your body contains a high proportion of water and needs enough pure water to function efficiently. Tap water is usually high in chlorine, fluoride and drug residue which are detrimental to health. A glass of pure water with the juice of half an organic lemon is a good cleansing drink first thing in the morning.

Replace coffee and regular tea with fruit and vegetable juices, herbal or fruit teas. Green tea is high in antioxidants but still contains caffeine so avoid drinking too many cups. Aim to have 6 - 8 glasses of fluid a day and more in hot weather or when you exercise.

Get some exercise

Exercise helps the blood and lymph circulate to all the organs to take them nutrients and collect the wastes to be eliminated via the detox organs. Daily brisk walking, or riding a bike is essential. Swimming in chlorine free pools, and running at least 4 times a week is beneficial. I always say its best to sweat at least once a day to detox.

Don't forget to brush your skin daily with a natural bristle brush to help with lymph circulation and make your skin glow. Never let salt from sweating build up on your skin after a work. Always wash your face.

Avoid Re-tox

Look for natural personal care products to reduce the toxic chemicals that are absorbed from your skin. Buy natural household cleaning products that do not pollute the environment. Many are highly toxic when inhaled.

Although you won't get rid of a lifetime of toxins during a 7 or 14 day detox it will help to make you more aware of what you are putting into your body and learn to become attuned to what it really needs. If you stick to the principles of a healthy diet you will feel good, look good and dramatically improve your health. Trust!

Youssou N'Dour: I Bring What I Love

Directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi

"Portrait of the Senegalese superstar musician isn’t so much a career overview as a compelling look at his attempts to reconcile politics, spirituality, and fame at a turbulent moment in history." —New York Magazine

Youssou N'Dour: I Bring What I Love is a remarkable film portrait of the legendary artist and humanitarian and the making of his Grammy Award-winning album Egypt. An extraordinary testament to his Muslim faith and an impassioned plea for a more tolerant view of Islam, the film profiles N'Dour with candid insight while providing a timely look at the complex place of music in Islam. WOMEN ARE HEROES”

The Woman Project wants to underline their pivotal role and to hightline their dignity by shooting them in their daily lives and posting them on the walls of their country.

On the other hand, by posting the same images if these women in Western countries, the project allows everyone to feel concerned by their condition and connects, through art, the two different worlds.

Kenya, South-Sudan, Sierra.-Leone, Liberia - The violence suffered by woman there is the extreme expression of discrimination. The ethnic wars in Africa are a source of the worst crimes on woman. When meeting them, JR wants to testify of their force, their courage and their noble struggle: first to live, then to exist.

Do you wash your hands correctly?

Chances are, you have been washing your own hands for quite a while. Bacteria, viruses, fungi and other microbiotic life are everywhere. All it takes is a little soap and some water, right? Actually, there is a bit more to handwashing. Below, find out how to wash your hands correctly, and why it matters so much.

Here's Why:

The single most important thing you can do to keep from getting sick and to stop the spread of disease-causing germs is to wash your hands often . By frequently washing your hands, you wash away germs that you may have picked up from other people or from contaminated surfaces. One of the most common ways people catch colds is by rubbing their nose or their eyes after their hands have been contaminated with the cold virus. More frequent hand washing may be able to reduce the spread of the cold virus. Some studies show that when children are carefully taught to wash their hands school absenteeism is reduced, perhaps especially when alcohol-based hand rubs are combined with handwashing.

You cannot see germs with the naked eye, so wash your hands often. Especially important times include:

* After using a Computer(computer hold germs more than any tool in the home)
* Before, during, and after you prepare food
* Before you eat
* After you use the bathroom
* After you change a diaper
* After handling animals or animal waste
* When your hands are dirty
* More frequently when someone in your home is sick

Here's How:

To properly wash your hands, follow these simple steps:

* First wet your hands with warm water and apply liquid or lather with a clean bar of soap.
* Next rub your hands together vigorously and scrub all surfaces. Also clean under your fingernails to help control germs and keep them trimmed and short.
* Continue for at least 15 seconds or about the length of a little tune (for example: the "Happy Birthday" song). It is the soap combined with the scrubbing action that helps dislodge and remove germs.
* Rinse your hands well and then dry them.

Note: When soap is not readily available, alcohol-based hand rubs offer a quick and easy alternative. No water is needed and studies show they’re fairly effective. But washing with soap is still the best single step you can take to prevent infection.

Germs on Computers:
Did you know that the average computer keyboard is proven to accumulate more germs than a public toilet?Considering how often fingers come into contact with computer keyboards, it's not surprising that a new study published in Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology found some pretty gross results.

*All keyboards tested positive for a staph bacterium called coagulase-negative staphylococci. This is one of the most common causes of bloodstream infections among those hospitalized.

*80 percent of keyboards contained diphtheroids. This bacteria represents a significant infection risk for those whose immune systems are weak, such as cancer and AIDS patients.

In my opinion the best thing to wash your hands with is what doctors use before the operate on patients. Makes the most sense right? Its a solution called Betadine and you can pick it up from any pharmacy or grocery store. When I am at home I spread in across my hands before I use liquid soap and warm water. This is what it looks like::

Be well folks...Your only as clean as the last thing you touch!
