Pesticides: Why Organic???

We are definitely living in a time where the reasoning behind "green living" is chic but, not completely overstood.  Don't get me wrong, I am thankful to see a shift in the world's consciousness, however we can get it, is good.  We do however, need to be informed on the what's and the why's.  How much do we really know about Pesticides?  And do we know that it takes a lot more than a fruit and vegetable wash to get rid of them.  A report from the Pesticide  Action Network of North America reveals that most of us are exposed to toxic pesticides from foods, up to 70 times a day.  They work their way into our bodies faster than they can be eliminated, resulting in allergies, respiratory, and nervous conditions.  Pesticide sprays encourage life-threatening bacteria to grow on crops, posing a real threat for the folks who eat fresh commercial produce.(especially strawberries, raspberries, and lettuce.)  New studies also link pesticides and pollutants to hormone dysfunctions, psychological disorders, and birth defects. The U.S. is one of the largest sellers of DDT (a pesticide) to the rest of the world.  Many food producing countries that supply the U.S. do not have pesticide bans, so imported foods can still carry a toxic threat.  Studies show that consistent exposure to PCB residues from our foods has resulted in a rise in breast cancer, pollutants are stored in fatty tissue areas, like breast tissue.  Please begin to take steps to protect yourself and your family from chemical residues in food.  We suggest that you buy organic, local, and seasonal produce whenever possible.  Organic food standards require that no food labeled organic can be treated w/ chemical pesticides, radiation, or genetic engineering.  Some fruits and vegetables with low pesticide residues are avocados, onions, broccoli, bananas, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, corn, and watermelon.  Please wash all your food thoroughly, especially these because their residues are a bit higher, strawberries, cherries, spinach, bell peppers, cucumbers, and grapes. Enjoy all the fruits of the season.  Be well...
